It's True: Skirts Are Back, But I Only Have Eyes for This Fresh 2024 Style
Along with slim, rectangular specs and pointed-toe court shoes, wool skirts are right on track for a major comeback this winter. Whilst it certainly wins practicality points—wool is, of course, a winter-weather non-negotiable—that's not the only reason we've fallen for this heavy-weight fabric in skirt form this time around. Adding structure and texture, sleek wool skirts offer a malleable outfit canvas infused with a polished edge that can be heightened or toned down depending on your styling choices.
Spotted all over the A/W 23 runways paired with button-down shirts, tweed jackets, skin-grazing knits and boxy blazers, the season's new favourite skirt was a unanimous hit across the designers. And out on the streets, influencers are already playing to the tailored elements of these neat skirts, styling them with classic turtlenecks and sharp kitten heels on repeat.
Whilst a mini length offers a playful way of wearing the trending skirt, I'm especially interested in wool skirts that fall to the knee and below. This season, knee-grazing cuts have experienced a redemption arc akin to the UGG renaissance of 2023. Though the "unflattering length" was nowhere to be seen for a good while, designers such as Miu Miu and Gucci have peppered the once-dated hemline throughout their recent winter collections. Towards the maxi end of the skirting scale, Dior sent floor-grazing wool skirts down the runway, styled with matching jackets and refined jewels en mass.
Though wool skirts are as versatile as any cotton equivalent, these heavier styles look chicest when paired with a pair of pointed-toe heels or knee-high boots. When the weather calls for it, style up with warm tights and plenty of layers, but as we move towards springtime, opt for bare legs and ballet flats to give the winter style a new lease of life.
