I'm in My 60s, and This Is the Winter Skincare Routine That's Saved My Skin
Susan Feldman is the co-founder of One Kings Lane and In the Groove, a style destination where she shares her age-defying outfits and shopping tips. Feldman is also our resident style expert here at Who What Wear, and she’s shared everything from the basics she packs for every trip to the style mistakes she won’t repeat. Today, she’s sharing her best winter skincare tips—whether you’re in your 20s or 60s.
When the coldest months of the year roll around, I switch up more than just my seasonal wardrobe. I also have to shake up my skincare. It’s nothing major, but a few subtle adjustments to help counteract the chilly temperatures, dry winds, and constant exposure to indoor heaters. And what do all of those things have in common? They dry out your skin!
I’ve found that a routine that’s focused more on hydrating and plumping keeps my skin glowy instead of chapped. I felt compelled to share my top tips since they’ve saved my skin during these past few months. For me, it comes down to five steps: cleansing, adding a Vitamin C serum, moisturizing, using a hydrating oil, and exfoliating. Of course, you should always finish with sunscreen during the day and drink a lot of water for an overall healthy glow. But if you’re struggling with dryness or tightness right now as a result of the chill in the air, then I have some excellent recommendations for you here.
I’m breaking down my winter skincare routine for you here and sharing my favorite products that I’ve personally vetted. This routine can be adopted whether you’re in your 60s like I am, your 20s, or really any age.
Step 1: Gentle Cleanser
Cleansing is the first step to healthy skin. As it gets chillier, I use a gentler cleanser that won’t strip my skin of essential oils and even hydrates as it cleans.
Step 2: Vitamin C Serum
Vitamin C serums are great to use year-round, but I really notice a difference in the winter when my skin can get dull. It will make your complexion brighter and more radiant, as well as help with fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.
Step 3: Moisturizer
Using a good winter moisturizer will lock in and enhance your skin’s natural moisture, while also improving the smoothness and fine lines. Also, it just feels good! Who likes that tight, dry feeling that comes with dry skin? No one.
Step 4: Hydrating Oil
I recently learned about the magic of hydrating oils. It’s perfect for winter skincare because it’s just one extra step that really helps to lock in all the moisture from your other products. And your skin will look extra dewy and glowy.
Step 5: Gentle Exfoliation
Gentle exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells accumulated from dry winter air, leaving your skin looking more radiant and helping your post-cleaning moisturizer absorb better.
