7 Winter Lingerie Trends You Should Know About
If there's anything we've learned from lingerie experts in the past, it's that lingerie, just like the rest of your wardrobe, is seasonal. This means swapping out pieces that suit the rotation ahead, in addition to taking note of the rising trends on the block. Since winter is a time to really bundle up, thinking about what to wear underneath it all that will make you feel just a tad more special than before is a fun task.
Considering both the practical and the more whimsical elements that winter brings, we have rounded up some of the biggest winter lingerie trends of 2018 with a little help from senior buyer at Journelle Julie McConnell and Jennifer Zuccarini, founder of Fleur du Mal. This includes everything from long-sleeved bodysuits you'll wear on the daily to those three-piece sets reserved for special occasions only.
Trust us when we say the below roundup contains a lingerie trend fit for every style type, so sift through wisely with your gifting list in mind.
Red Hot
There's no time like the winter holiday season to stock up on the one color of lingerie you probably never buy—red. Wear this color underneath all your party frocks or gift it to all of your friends because I don't know about you, but I'd love to open up a red satin bra on Christmas morning.
"Red has become a staple in women's lingerie wardrobes and for good reason. A true-red set can completely shift your mood." — Julie McConnell, senior buyer at Journelle
"Color—we love it. Sometimes it’s challenging to get women to buy colorful lingerie, but red is the exception. Red has been a strong trend in fashion for the last few seasons, but it’s also the most powerful and seductive color." — Jennifer Zuccarini, founder of Fleur du Mal
All the Frills
While feathers, satin bows, and see-through lace don't air on the practical side of the lingerie spectrum, they perfectly fit into our idea of a winter wonderland. Thanks to some of the more daring lingerie brands, there are tons of frilly options to suit your whimsical winter desires.
"There's something refreshing about lingerie that is unapologetically girly and feminine." — Julie McConnell
A Time for Sleeves
Bodysuits are one of the most popular lingerie trends since they also teeter into the ready-to-wear realm. Worn with jeans, skirts, and more, bodysuits are a fashion girl's trick to staying polished with minimal to no effort. This season, long-sleeved bodysuits are the style to try if you want to stay warm without adding one extra layer.
"We are all about ways to show off your lingerie in your daily life. It's no wonder we are obsessed with this long-sleeve bodysuit that pairs perfectly with your favorite set." — Julie McConnell
"Bodysuits have continued as a trend. We're seeing more substantial fabrics like sweater knits and ribs, and also bodysuits with more coverage in lace or lace and knit, giving a seamless look that can be worn during colder weather, layered under slip dresses, etc." — Jennifer Zuccarini
Velvet Touch
Velvet is the winter texture that just won't quit. As of late, we've seen lingerie brands tackle the trend in fresh new ways including trims, teddies, and bralettes.
"Velvet is always popular during the holiday season. Although we are using velvet less for ready to wear, our Lily Velvet lingerie collection has been super popular." — Jennifer Zuccarini
Seeing Spots
We couldn't talk about winter trends without bringing up leopard print. It's been proven that the trend didn't just dominate the runways; it also dominated the lingerie market. Coming in bold colors and barely there prints, this is one trend that really caters to a wide variety of style types.
Stockings Up
Tights were out for a while, but they're back. Initially returning with quite a vengeance by way of loud colors and prints, the winter version of this trend is going back to its roots with classic fishnet, sheer tights, and even stockings.
"We're all about that Friday night tights game! We like these Wolford Twenties because they are subtle enough to wear every day but add a certain je ne sais quoi to any outfit." — Julie McConnell
Set Life
Don't know what to gift? Gift a lingerie set. Don't know what to buy? Buy a lingerie set. There's no better feeling than slipping into a matching bra and underwear duo accompanied by a suspender belt. Wear this under a black-tie gown or even under a daytime dress to feel extra special throughout the day. We won't tell.
"Tis the season for suspenders! We've never had more requests for suspenders than we have this season. That old Hollywood look is back, and we hope it's here to stay." — Julie McConnell
"We’ve been seeing a trend toward three-piece lingerie sets: bra, panty, and garter belt sets with stockings. It’s definitely popular for gifting, but this is the perfect time to slyly add a garter belt and stockings under your holiday look. Maybe it is the anti-yoga pant effect." — Jennifer Zuccarini
