5 Summer Must-Haves That Are Trendy—But Not Too Trendy
Did that headline resonate? You know, the "trendy but not too trendy” part? Personally, I feel like it’s a hard balance to find and something I struggle with all the time. I love my "simple" style, but I also want to take it up a notch every once in a while. We always read (and in my case, write) about trends or basics but rarely cover that middle ground—probably because, like I said, it’s hard to pinpoint! Well, folks, today I’m finally trying.
After giving it some thought, I’m pretty sure I’ve narrowed down five summer staples we should all own for that forward (but not too forward) and fashionable look. Of course, you may already have some in your closet, in which case you can just use the below as outfit inspo. But if you don’t, I’ve also shopped out affordable versions of each essential with the help of our very own Who What Wear collection for Target. From skirts to sets, just keep scrolling to see, read about, and shop the summer must-haves I've come up with for that perfect in-between look.
1. Fun Tops
A seasonally appropriate printed top can be worn with anything from your favorite jeans to a contrasting-print skirt for an outfit that's you, but a little, well, more fun.
2. Slip Skirts
Given the fashion set's affinity for them, slip skirts are practically basics at this point, but if you don't already own one, I can understand how they seem intimidating. My advice? Opt for a print or color and style it with your simplest tee or tank.
3. Matching Sets
Repeat after me: You can never go wrong with a matching set. Seriously though, something about the combination of a top and bottom in the same print just looks put-together and cool every time, so owning (at least) one is a no-brainer.
Shop the matching Striped Mid-Rise A Line Midi Skirt ($32).

Shop the matching Mid Thigh Relaxed Fit Shorts ($30.)

4. Utility-Inspired Pants
I practically live in jeans, but I recently started to lean into the utility-inspired pant trend (also approved by our editor, Ally). I think they're the perfect cool girl's summer alternative.
5. Easy Dresses
Does it get any easier than an easy dress? I think not. By this, I mean just fill your closet with cute, comfortable, one-and-done frocks, and you can never really look less than great.

Since starting as an intern back in 2013, Nicole Akhtarzad Eshaghpour has held several roles here at Who What Wear, and she is currently Editor-at-Large. It was a less expected route, seeing as she was graduating from business school at USC when this all began, but it has turned out to be the best one for her. Fast-forward to 2024, and she's moved to NYC from her hometown of Beverly Hills and spends her workdays a little differently from when she was an intern starting out. Currently, she focuses on a weekly mélange of shopping content. As far as her personal style goes, she's largely drawn to classic pieces and neutral basics but will always make an exception for something colorful, printed, or bejeweled as long as it's deemed worthy enough. After all, the only thing she loves more than a good party is dressing up for one. On weekdays, she can usually be found at home eating something delicious for dinner and trying to force her husband to watch Summer House.
