9 Easy Yet Smart Outfit Formulas I Always Come Back to in April
April is upon us, and although we can officially say spring is here, the weather still can’t seem to commit to the change in season—one minute, it’s glorious sunshine, and then the next, it’s threatening to downpour. Ah, Britain. So what do you wear when spring isn't quite making an appearance and you can't be dealing with the cold weather anymore? Take outfit inspiration from some of our favourite influencers, of course.
After trawling through their Instagram accounts, we managed to come up with 11 key looks that are ideal for any sort of changeable weather April might throw at us. From cool layered outfits to co-ords that are right for the office (and won't have you freezing), there are plenty of ideas you'll want to copy immediately. We’ve actually already begun incorporating them into our outfit rotations. Keep scrolling for everything you need to know on the subject of what to wear in April.
What to Wear in April: A Stylish Guide
1. Bright Vest + Ecru Jeans + Black Accessories
Style Notes: Nothing says "spring” quite like a white-trouser outfit. We don’t know about you, but we’d very much like to re-create this ensemble involving a vest in one of the season's biggest colour trends, saffron red.

The slightly barrel leg makes this fit feel cooler than skinnies.
2. Light Layering + Closed-Toe Shoes
Style Notes: April is the month to get acquainted with some clever layering. Think of lighter pieces that will keep you warm on chillier spring days. This look is exactly what we mean: a polished shirtdress worn with trousers and chic flats.
Shop the Look:
We're still ballet pump obsessed, and Aeyde's minimal pair are some of the best.
3. Relaxed Suit + Chunky Sandals
Style Notes: Still not ready to give up your cosy clothes post-winter? Right now there is a load of slouchy suits around that are still smart enough for work or drinks. Just pair with fisherman sandals or loafers, depending on the forecast.
Shop the Look:
I keep seeing this suit on all of Instagram's most-stylish dressers.
Wear this with a white T-shirt underneath for an extra layer.
4. Leather Jacket + Oxford Shirt + Lace Slip
Style Notes: Slip skirts might feel fancy, but that doesn't mean you need to stash them away—they look the springtime part paired with a leather jacket and oversized shirt.
Shop the Look:
5. Double Denim + Tan Accessories
Style Notes: The denim shirt rarely goes out of fashion. It's an ideal top option, too, as it gives you a bit of warmth without making you feel boiling if the sun finally decides to make an appearance. Take a leaf out of Aïda's book, and wear it with your favourite jeans and tan accessories.
Shop the Look:
6. Shirt + Midi Skirt + Loafers
Style Notes: There's just something about shirts that instantly make your outfits feel fresh. Now that bare-leg season is imminent, why not embrace the full midi skirt trend and pair it with equally sharp loafers.
Shop the Look:
7. Knitted Dress + Ballet Flats
Style Notes: Knitted dresses help bridge the gap between cool spring days and the warm—all you need to think about is your shoes and bag. I recommend some on-trend ballet flats and a top-handle.
Shop the Look:
8. Blazer + Jeans + Mary Janes
Style Notes: It comes as no surprise that jeans are especially popular around springtime. But how to wear them right now? Emma Rose Thatcher's option is one of our favourites—add a blazer, a jumper knotted around your shoulders should you need an extra layer, and mary jane flats.
Shop the Look:
9. Roll Neck Knit + Satin Skirt
Style Notes: As we’ve already established, skirts are trending this season and present the perfect way to make your chunky knits work for the warmer weather. This cream-jumper-and-sage-slip combination looks sleek while the colours look so expensive together.
