My Birthday Is NYE, So I'm the Expert in Dressing for New Year's Parties
During my teenage years, my New Year’s Eve outfit would often consist of the following: a pair of flared Miss Sixty jeans, a halter-neck top from Miss Selfridge and a pair of pointed shoes from Dune (or at least some kind of variation of this). In my 20s, I opted for a low(er)-key look preferring slouchy jumpers and boyfriend jeans with sneakers. Now that I’m in my 30s, I wholeheartedly want to embrace this night. Not just because it’s my birthday, but also because it’s worth trying to make it fun.
Okay, so not every NYE party is going to turn out like the end scene from When Harry Met Sally (we should all be so lucky to have Billy Crystal running for us like that), but it’s worth dressing up for, even if you’re sitting at home eating Christmas cheese with leftover chutney. Right now, I’m all about wearing something sparkly or sassy to give you a feeling that you’re going to the best party ever. I hunted down six outfits from some of the most fabulously dressed influencers to give you ideas on your ultimate New Year’s Eve look. Keep scrolling for more…
Style Notes: I love the simplistic nature of this outfit. A statement skirt doesn’t need much to make it look great as it’s already more than halfway there. Add a white tee and a pair of strappy heels to really make it feel elegant.
Style Notes: For a nod to ‘80s style, try an off-the-shoulder dress with big puffed sleeves. All you need to add are a pair of patterned tights and big earrings.
Style Notes: You need a sassy outfit in your NYE arsenal just in case. Perhaps you’re going to a party and you know your ex will be there. Whatever reason you’re wearing it, make sure you have long sleeves to balance out the split—it’ll look more impactful that way.
Style Notes: Haven’t you heard? Minidresses are back in a big way. Try one with oversized shoulders and wear with knee-high boots. Bare legs optional.
Style Notes: A midi dress that’s matching with your tights might seem a little contrived, but it genuinely looks great. Wear with a clashing shoe colour.
Style Notes: If you hate dresses and skirts, then the other fancy option is a pair of sparkly trousers. Go all out and pair with a bold top too. Well, it is NYE, after all.
