6 Stylish Updates That Will Infinitely Improve Your Winter Wardrobe
There are a few classic winter pieces that many of our editors consider to be true wardrobe staples. Yes, timeless turtlenecks and black wool coats are often at the top of the list, but that being said, we always like to switch up our style and test out new looks each season, and there’s a new host of items that we’ve been wearing on rotation in an effort to update our closets. And excitingly, these items could very easily become our new wardrobe essentials.
Thinking specifically about what you'll want to wear on those difficult in-between days with the brightness of spring but the temperature of winter still very much in effect, I've put together an edit of the best winter trends that score highly for their easy-to-style nature.
For example, the jumper style that is bound to get a lot of mileage because of its sheer versatility. And, the denim cut that the team already predict will be a bestseller this season. Want to know what to wear right now that looks smart, keeps you warm and will go with everything you already own? Keep scrolling to check out the new winter staples, complete with shopping picks and visual inspiration from some of our favourite fashion people.
1. HALF-ZIP AND BUTTON UP KNITS
Style Notes: Sure, we love a classic crew neck jumper, but a knit featuring either a half-zip or a half-buttoned detail is one of the key elevated basics of the season, and it'll serve you well in the transitional period between winter and spring (think clever ventilation). An effortless and versatile choice that always looks polished (and cosy) with a wide leg trouser and pointed ankle boot.
SHOP ZIP AND BUTTON UP KNITS:
If you don't already know Raey, here's a handy guide to why they deserve a permanent spot in your wardrobe.
A cable-knit-meets-zip-up that is guaranteed to beat the cold.
2. CLOUD COATS
Style Notes: And, relax. There's nothing better than slipping into an ultra-cosy cloud coat, or quilted coat are they are better known, as your first defence against the winter chill. These puffed up duvet coats are reigning supreme right now, and the majority of influencers, editors and stylists we know have already subscribed to the look, so there's no shortage of outfit inspo to add your moodboard.
SHOP QUILTED COATS:
The Frankie Shop managed to kick start this trend with a jacket so good it has its own cult following.
This longline liner coat is the waterproof layer that weekend walks definitely require.
It might not be a "throw on and go" coat, but this Prada sleeveless version is an outfit all in itself.
3. CARGO PANTS
Style Notes: Yep, the Y2K has resurrected cargo pants, and these influencer favourites are also a unanimous front-runner amongst the team. This trouser style isn't just a throwback, they also bring the instant cool factor to any winter look that deserves more than your everyday jeans.
SHOP CARGO TROUSERS:
The classic cargo trouser? It has to be khaki green, of course.
4. CHUNKY CABLE KNIT SWEATERS
Style Notes: If we were to rank the best pieces of knitwear of all time, the cable-knit sweater would be the top pick given it's chic and comfortable nature. Dressed down with jeans, or styled up with maxi coats and heels, if the first thing you reach for when its cold outside is a cosy knit, try an oversized, slouchy cable-knit for a 2023 take on the classic winter staple.
SHOP CABLE KNIT JUMPERS:
The dropped shoulder and long cuffs give this jumper a strong silhouette.
Layer over an oversized shirt and wear with leggings and chunky ankle boots. You're welcome.
I've been obsessed with this unique since it first landed, but now it's in the sale there are only a few units left, so be quick off the mark to secure one.
The slight crop makes this jumper the perfect length for high-waisted skirts and trousers without the need to tuck in.
5. LEATHER TROUSERS
Style Notes: If you don't already own a pair of leather trousers, what have you been waiting for? Is it the price? No problem, there's a pair of every budget. The fit? You can find sizes 4 to 32 on the high street, and even in petite, regular and large. The fabric? Vegan and faux leather are just as good as the real thing. Whatever your criteria, there's pair that will make any ensemble feel elevated.
SHOP LEATHER TROUSERS:
Our favourite sculpting jeans now come in a cream, leather finish.
Is this not the best shade of petrol blue you've ever seen?
Finally, a good-looking pair of straight leg trousers that cater from size 12 up to 32.
You heard it here first–the rounded, wide-legged barrel shape is the new It style.
6. DARK JEANS
Style Notes: It just wouldn't be a complete edit without at least one pair of jeans, and on the denim front, dark-wash and indigo jeans will be at the top of the pile in our closets. Dark, dressy, and very of the moment. Goodbye stonewashed skinnies.
SHOP DARK DENIM:
Conscious shoppers will love that these jeans are made from regenerative wild Himalayan nettle and organic cotton, but look and feel like regular denim.
The latest relaxed jean from Ralph Lauren's Comfort Stretch collection.
An ultra-high waist that solves the dilemma of the dreaded waist gap.
