What to Wear in January When You're Completely Bored of Your Wardrobe
Deciding what to wear in January can be tricky.
It's still freezing, so you need to stay warm and cosy, but it's also a fresh start, and we've likely all made a resolution of some kind and have our eyes firmly fixed on moving forward, so it's understandable if stepping back into 2024's wardrobe feels a little, well, stale.
Luckily, there's a solution, and it's not to throw everything away! Naturally, a little wardrobe organisation is a great idea at this time of year, but budgets are also tight post-Christmas. So, before you swear off certain things or go on a buying rampage, consider the pieces that can be used to elevate the other items you already own. We're talking injections of colour to brighten up the grey January days, different styles of jeans and trousers to get you out of your trackies and footwear that can instantly take even the simplest outfits up a notch. Even better, each of these pieces is a great addition to a capsule wardrobe—they're versatile, timeless and effortlessly easy to style.

1. A Colourful Cardigan
Style Notes: After living in jumpers all month long, I feel the need to shake things up without sacrificing my cosiness. Enter the cardigan. Follow Abisola Omole's example above and opt for something bright to get a dopamine hit on the greyest January day.
This would also be a great spring cardi.
This soft hue would pair so well with all your favourite neutrals.
2. Barrel-Leg Jeans
Style Notes: It's the surprise hit denim silhouette that isn't going anywhere in 2025. Plus, the shape is roomy enough to convince me to get out of my trackies and leggings.
These would carry you well into the summer months.
3. A Leather Bomber
Style Notes: When it comes to January outerwear, I want throw-on pieces that can instantly elevate an otherwise simple outfit whilst keeping me warm. A leather bomber does exactly that and is timeless enough that you'll find you wear it for years to come.
The sleek shape means this would go with absolutely everything.
This navy version would look particularly great with white jeans or trousers.
I'm such a fan of this cropped waist, especially if you want to give a bit more shape to a loose dress.
4. Knee-High Boots
Style Notes: If there's one style of footwear that's going to instantly make you feel more refined, it's the knee-high boot. Flat or heeled, these sleek styles are a perfect way to update your skirts and dresses.
For something a little bolder, opt for these very on-trend leopard-print boots.
5. Silk Trousers
Style Notes: Want to ease yourself out of your PJs and lounge bottoms as you re-enter the real world? Turn to the sleek new trend that all your favourite fashion people are embracing: silk trousers. Lean into their effortless elegance by pairing yours with a cashmere knit and loafers.
I've spotted so many influencers in this Toteme pair.
6. Colourful Trainers
Style Notes: One of my favourite Scandi-approved styling tricks is giving a simple outfit a refresh with a jolt of colour, courtesy of a pair of statement trainers. This year, bright yellow, green and red are the top hues to go for.
These are high on my 2025 wish list.
Burgundy dominated the past few months, and these trainers have me convinced the colour isn't going anywhere.
7. Leather Trousers
Style Notes: This January, I'm determined to find the perfect pair of leather trousers. The search for the right fit is the trickiest part—after that, you'll find them surprisingly easy to style. Throw on a crisp shirt or slouchy knit and you're ready to go.
Trust Stella McCartney to create an ultra-cool vegan pair.
The flare has such a fun, '70s vibe.
8. Leopard-Print Flats
Style Notes: Animal print was a big trend in 2024, and I don't think it'll be disappearing in 2025. Leopard is my personal favourite—it feels classic yet fresh and has an air of French style. Wear these flats with everything from jeans and jumpers to your favourite LBD.
The stitching makes these look especially elevated.
