6 Styling Tricks That Feel Really New for Spring
From Paris to Milan, New York to London, each season, designers use the ready-to-wear runway shows as a means to display the new clothing and accessories that their brands have to offer. And although we revel in the chance to view the new collections, here at Who What Wear UK, we take fashion week as an opportunity to observe more than just new clothes.
Each season, runway shows provide myriad styling and outfit ideas, as brands find unique ways to display their debuting items. Whether it be styling a cardigan as a base layer or a silk scarf as a statement belt, each runway show often brings with it an interesting new way to style a piece of clothing that we've never thought of before.
Of course, the S/S 20 runway shows were no exception. From Louis Vuitton pairing a sweater vest over an exaggerated puff-sleeve shirt to Khaite's styling of straight-leg jeans underneath a minidress, the ready-to-wear collections provided a plethora of outfit ideas that we can't wait to try.
And the best part? Many of the styling tricks seen on the runway can be re-created using the staples you already have in your wardrobe. If you own a roll-neck jumper and a button-up shirt, you can easily emulate the styling from Victoria Beckham's show, while a cropped cardi and waist belt can let you live out your dream of being a Chanel model. It really is that simple.
Keep scrolling for all the styling tricks we're stealing from the S/S 20 runways.
1. Wear a cardigan as base layer.
Cardigans have been a huge trend this winter, but Miuccia Prada took the item's ubiquity to the next level when she introduced a completely new way to wear them on the Miu Miu S/S 20 runway. Utilising a cardigan as a base layer is the fresh way to wear the knit for spring. Our tip? A cardi will look best when styled under sleeveless, square-neck dresses or tops.
2. Style a silk scarf as a belt.
If you've ever felt tired of all your skirts but were reluctant to buy something new, Burberry has the styling trick for you: Simply tie a silk scarf around your waist, and voilà. Your entire outfit will feel new with just the addition of one simple accessory.
3. Layer a minidress over jeans.
While the thought of a skirt over trousers might remind some of the mid-'90s when everyone was wearing miniskirts over three-quarter leggings, Khaite has proven that the trend well and truly belongs in the 21st century. Pairing straight-leg jeans with a minidress is a thoroughly modern take on the look.
4. Wear a vest over a puff-sleeve top.
Our shopping editor, Joy, has been advocating for the return of the sweater vest for quite some time. Here, Louis Vuitton proves that the item is on-trend for 2020 spring by styling it against the ever-popular puff-sleeve shirt.
5. Pair a roll-neck under a shirt.
The Victoria Beckham spring runway offered a plethora of styling inspo. Though, one of our favourite looks has to be this roll-neck styled under a button-down shirt.
6. Add a waist belt to your cardigan.
Chanel offers a little more proof that cardigans are one of spring's most important staples. Here, the brand has belted a statement cardigan, cinching in the waist to enhance its silhouette.
