The world of fashion basics hasn't always been a particularly exciting one. Historically speaking, a sensible sweater and layering vest weren't exactly considered the height of sophistication. But over the last decade or so, the fashion industry has clearly started to tune in to the value of this wardrobe category and is now delivering brands that not only make buying basics an appealing prospect but also elevate them to cult-favourite must-haves. While it only launched in 2018, PANGAIA is one brand that has stormed the basics landscape with its rainbow of staples. I'm talking hoodies, tracksuits, sweaters, T-shirts, and everything in between—and the industry is certainly paying attention.
Not only has PANGAIA fine-tuned its design DNA over the last three years, but it's leading the way in textile innovation and has set the goal to become an "earth positive" business using the United Nations' "Sustainable Development Goals" as a guiding framework. Speaking from my experience as a fashion editor, it's rare to find a company that's founded on such strong principles while still maintaining an aesthetic that's appealing to the customer. Let's hope it's a sign of good things to come for the fashion industry.
Having recently tried on pieces from the brand, I can personally attest to its quality and versatility. I have my eye on the high neck sweatshirt in jade green (very 2021), which will look just as good with jeans as it will with mini skirts. I plan on adding polish to the jersey fabric with a pair of wide-leg black trousers and loafers, then perhaps finishing the look with an oversized trench—perfect for a high-low weekend ensemble.
