Is It Just Us, or Is Everyone in London Wearing One of These 9 Buys?
There are certain items (often from Zara) that I see women wearing almost every day on my commute. There have even been Instagram accounts set up in order to showcase these cult pieces, such as that Zara dress. I did some thorough research to discover the most-spotted items this month (i.e., I asked the Who What Wear UK office and put the question into all my WhatsApp groups) to see which pieces were the most popular in London. It quickly became clear that there are some high-street hits you're bound to see in any office or Underground station in the capital. In fact, you might already own some of them.
1. Throw-on-and-Go Dresses
In the summer, it was almost impossible to walk down the street without bumping into someone wearing that Zara dress, beloved for its cool, low-maintenance appeal. The throw-on-and-go dress has consequently exploded onto the high street, with everyone from Arket to Topshop creating their own iterations.
2. Dr. Martens
Thanks to the transitioning weather, Londoners are favouring DM boots paired with skirts, dresses and jeans.
3. Slip Skirts
Thankfully, the slip skirt is still going strong. The good thing is that it looks fantastic with a chunky knit and a pair of the above DMs.
4. Nike Air Max 97
We were surprised to discover that these sneakers are really popular right now, especially as we know a lot of Londoners love the simpler trainers from Veja. But everyone needs a sneaker selection for different looks and days, right?
5. Camel Coat
There are few closet staples that are as classic as a camel coat. It's the basic adored by everyone from chic Parisian women to fashion-forward Londoners. They're undeniably timeless, so if you don't own one already, now is the time to invest in a camel coat.
6. Puff-Sleeve Tops
From Meghan Markle to, well, practically everyone else, puff-sleeve tops are ubiquitous at the moment. The Duchess of Sussex found her iteration at Topshop, but there are also a few great options at & Other Stories, H&M and more.
7. Trench Coats
Trench coats are a closet staple no matter which way you look at it. This season, stylish Londoners are stepping things up by investing in trench coats that feature interesting colourways or unexpected patterns.
8. Hiking Boots
Initially, we thought we'd credit the popularity of these boots to their obvious practicality. Though after seeing so many pairs on the streets of London styled with flowing dresses or slip skirts, we'd hazard a guess to say that it's just as much about the fashion.
9. Wide-Leg Jeans
Wide-leg jeans are making quite the comeback at the moment—and fast taking over from skinny jeans in certain stylish circles. From Weekday to Zara, there plenty of places to find a great affordable pair.
