The Parisian Brand That Makes Every Wardrobe 100 Times Cooler

No one purposefully turns up to an event in the exact same outfit as somebody else, but every now and then comes an item that the fashion set is more than happy to twin in—Gucci backless loafers, say, or a Chanel logo tee. There are numerous Jacquemus pieces that I could add to this list—from the gigantic hat to the blue checked coat from 2017, confirming that French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus of Jacquemus is the name of 2018.

The Parisian designer was only born in 1990, but he is already leaving a huge mark on the industry with his playful and conceptual takes on French classics, Instagram-friendly knitwear and deconstructed tailoring. If you've looked at any street style imagery from the last 12 months, you will almost certainly have seen Jacquemus's creations, as the likes of Alexa Chung, Tamu McPherson and Taylor Tomasi Hill are all big fans. Rihanna even wore a pair of the wide-leg statement trousers to meet Prince Harry.

Simon launched his label Jacquemus (named after his mother's maiden name) when he was only 19 without any formal training. He also worked at Comme des Garçons after starting his career there as a sales assistant and has been credited with bringing a much-needed youthful spirit to the fashion industry in Paris. Unsurprisingly, he is one of the youngest designers to ever present at fashion week in Paris—a notoriously difficult and established schedule to snag a slot in.

His avant-garde aesthetic has certainly been popular on the street style scene—particularly the colour-blocked jumper with tie-detailing, the blue-and-white checked oversized coat, the polka-dot sarong skirt and the sculptural high heels. But it is a brand that is actually wearable outside of the fashion week world too, partly because he is adamant he wants to maintain a contemporary price point which is comparatively affordable in the context of Paris Fashion Week. Jacquemus is often hailed as one of the few designers that are really doing something different, creating truly distinctive silhouettes and statement pieces that you don't find in other collections.
