5 Simple Items That'll Trick People Into Thinking You Spent a Lot on Your Outfit

There’s nothing like that satisfying (and I’ll admit, smug) feeling of putting together an outfit that looks expensive but actually isn't. Over my many years working in fashion I’ve developed quite a knack for determining what items give an ensemble that overall elevated look. And today, I wanted to share a few of my favorite simple pieces—some of-the-moment trends, along with a few classic items—that I find always make my outfits look more luxe.
While you can certainly find some of these items at higher price points you don’t have to spend a ton on them to create an expensive looking ensemble. Keep scrolling for five uncomplicated pieces that’ll trick people into thinking you spent a lot on your outfit.
1. Silky Separates
Style Notes: From silky slip dresses to satin camisoles and slip skirts, a sumptuous fabric will always make your ensemble look expensive. Opt for minimalist silhouettes and neutral hues paired with classic, understated accessories.

2. Minimalist Maxi Hemlines
Style Notes: If you want to lean into a trend that feels fresh and looks upscale, then this season's maxi hemlines in '90s minimalist silhouettes are a must. Style a column skirt or dress with a vest top, blazer, and flats for a chic new-season look that looks expensive.

3. A Classic Leather Belt
Style Notes: I know, it doesn't sound very exciting, but trust me—one of the easiest ways to trick people into thinking you've spent a lot on an outfit is with the simple addition of a classic leather belt. It adds instant polish to your look and elevates even the simplest of basics. Opt for black, tan, or taupe hues and pair with shorts, pants, jeans, or blazers for a luxe look.

4. Vest/Waistcoat
Style Notes: Vests and waistcoats have been having a major moment this year, and it's honestly one of the items I reach for again and again, not only because its so versatile but mainly because they just look so chic. Whether worn alone with loose trousers or jeans, or layered under a blazer, the piece always makes an outfit look that much more sleek and smart.
Shop waistcoats:
5. Loose Tailored Trousers
Style Notes: Smart and polished, relaxed tailored trousers make every outfit look upscale. For a chic look style a neutral or black pair with pointed-toe heels and cinch them at the waist with a belt.
