7 Brown Outfits That Might Make You Love This Colour More Than Black
Our We Try Before You Buy series aims to take the stress out of shopping and eliminate the number of post office visits you make each month to return failed online orders. We test new-season buys and styling ideas so you don’t have to, thus saving you some coin by letting you know what’s worth the spend.
I live in a pallet of neutral tones (think chocolates, caramels, beiges and creams), so it was no hard task to wear as many brown pieces as I could in just a week. Who What Wear’s Emma Spedding feels so strongly about this trend she’s gone as far to say brown is the new black, and I am totally on board with it.
I wore brown for seven days straight, attempting to make brown look less like a paper bag and fashion forward. I tried every styling move I could think of, from colour clashes to head-to-toe looks to tonal dressing. Keep scrolling to see the seven ways I wore brown, and then shop my must-have pieces.
Monday: Back to Work
All our favourite tailored workwear pieces have been given the brown treatment this autumn. Say goodbye to your black trousers and hello to a brown check pair like these from & Other Stories. Because of the check print, you can keep this look tonal and go for a brown roll-neck in a different shade. White accessories are a great way to finish of this look, as they really compliment the tones.
Tuesday: A Pop of Colour
My favourite way to wear brown right now is with a contrasting pop of colour (particularly with a pop of pastel). I layered a knit over a silky caramel slip dress, but you could also introduce a bright roll-neck underneath or even a coloured bumbag. There are so many ways to do this, but just make sure it’s only the one piece and one colour to ensure this look hits the mark.
3. Wednesday: Not-So Subtle Suiting
Brown suiting is everywhere at the moment, and even on the high street, it’s looking top-notch. Being 5’5”, the trousers often swamp me, so I teamed this Zara blazer with cycling shorts. Yes, I am indeed a fan of the itsy bitsy bottoms, and after keeping a close eye on the S/S 19 runway shows, it’s clear they’re here to stay. This light camel Theory shirt is a great shade to complement with the brown rather than white.
Thursday: Head-to-Toe Brown
It sounds scary and totally unappealing to wear brown head to toe, but this is an easy way to throw together a chic, considered look. While this Eudon Choi dress is a charcoal colour, it means I can go all out with my brown accessories. Tiger-print shoes and a brown beaded bag might both be a tad unpractical, but isn’t that part of the fun of fashion?

Friday: Must-Have Coat
If you only buy one thing in this shade, make it a camel coat. This is a classic that never goes out of fashion, it just seems to get better every single year. From trenches to teddy bear coats, this is the colour you need to opt for when investing in your winter warmer.
Saturday: Dress Up
Out of everything brown at the moment, this has to be one of my favourites. Thank you Zara for bringing this to my wardrobe. While I love a slinky slip dress, some occasions call for a more appropriate option, so I’ve teamed this with a black-and-white roll-neck underneath. Yes, you can wear black with brown.

Sunday: Matching Tones
Caramel silk trousers teamed with a roll-neck just screams autumn, doesn’t it? This open Arket knitted bib is one of my favourites finds recently because you can layer it on top of so many different looks. I am also really into holding onto summer feet and barely there shoes for as long as possible (despite chilly feet), as they still look super chic with knits.
