This Classic French Jacket Style Is Back Again for Another Spring

When a fashion motif manages to span more than a decade, you know it's something to take note of. Tweed jackets are one such item that has become so enduring they've transcended the trend cycle and become a true timeless icon of its own right. If you feel that '90s fashion came back too fast for your liking, you'd be shocked to learn that this chic style has been reprised every season for the last 100 years.

Coco Chanel created the first iteration of her iconic tweed jacket back in the '1920s after her romance with Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster, took her to the moors of Scotland and introduced her the sturdy, wollen fabric. The couple had met on the Cote D'azur in the early part of the decade, but it was her connection with tweed jackets that become the most defining relationship of her life. Inspired by menswear tailoring Chanel's tweed jackets featured the signature contrasting trim, boxy fit and logo buttons, and to this day, it remains a firm favourite in the fashion hall of fame.

Since then, tweed jackets have been associated with everyone from certain Upper East Side matriarch personas (Bunny from Sex and the City springs to mind) to the rock and roll scions Gene, Lennon and Anais Gallagher at the French maison's Manchester-set Metiers D'Art show last year. Still, the silhouette has a firm Parisian footing, with tweed jackets becoming a hallmark design for French fashion brands across every price point.

In recent years, a younger crowd have embraced its sophisticated charms and introduced a fresh take on the classic silhouette, ushering a legion of expensive-looking high street options in the process.

(There will always be a place for the famed matchy-matchy twinset pairing, but I've loved seeing how fashion fanatics have turned the trend on its head with distressed denim, leggings and even a cheeky jogging bottom or two.)

The spring/summer 2025 season alone has already seen a huge influx of tweed jackets arrive on the market and on the backs of the street style set.

As you can imagine, there is a wide variety of tweed jackets you can shop and have already likely seen styled as your favourite influencer's spring jacket of choice. You can happily nab a jacket for £40 from H&M or take the plunge with a vintage Chanel from Vestiaire Collective for a cool £2,000 or your go-to luxury charity shop.

But don't worry—there are plenty of options to be found in the middle ground from brands such as Sandro, M&S and & Other Stories.

This spring, I plan on balancing out the tweed jacket's traditional polish with a white tee, slouchy jeans and my favourite vintage cowboy boots. But I'm certain you'll see plenty of fashion lovers opting in for the runway trend of a full tweed skirt suit.

Versatile, long-lasting and a key 2025 jacket trend, tweed jackets are a style to really get on board with if you haven't already. Ahead, see and shop my edit of the best designer, high-street and vintage tweed jackets to suit every budget.

What Are the Differences Between Bouclé and Tweed Jackets?

If you're aware of the rich history of tweed jackets, you'll probably be aware that they regularly get referred to as bouclé jackets. If you've never noticed a difference, fear not. The main variance comes from the way the fibres are stitched together as tweed is made from spinning raw materials into a knit while bouclé is made via a half-loop stitch. This is all very technical, so just think: Tweed is heavy, rough in texture, while bouclé has a more pilled touch.

Is Tweed or Wool Warmer?

Tweed jackets are typically made from wool, though depending on the designer can also feature synthetic fibres like metallic yarn to make the piece feel more elevated. Wool is naturally hypoallergenic and thermal regulating, but because of how tweed jackets are made, they're typically a lot thicker than conventional wool coats, blazers and jackets and therefor warmer.

What Is the Best Quality Tweed?

Scotland's Harris Tweed is regarded as the best quality tweed in the world. It's been used in the atelier's of Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and more when making their tweed jackets.

What Brands Are Famous for Tweed Jackets?

Chanel is the brand most famous for tweed jackets. The motif is a symbol of the house and has subsequently appeared as an icon of luxury. Tweed jackets not only make up their ready-to-wear but inspire its accessories, footwear and high jewellery, too.

However, they're not the only brand famous for tweed jackets. Other French labels like Sandro and Claudie Pierlot are known for their Parisianne-inspired styles.
