I'm a Stylist—My Wardrobe Wouldn't Function Without This Simple Piece
The terms "fashion basic" and "style staple" get bandied about a lot, but they're not always the clearest or most objective. After all, an essential for one person may be a luxury for another. But in my experience, very few people can argue with the fact that tank tops (vests, to us Brits) remain a core part of our wardrobes all year round, particularly when the temperatures start to pick up. A good vest doesn't interfere with the pieces worn over the top, but it's equally good flying solo. Whether you prefer to dress yours up with smart, tailored trousers and a blazer, or if you just throw it on with jeans, the tank top is one item of clothing that you're sure to get plenty of wear out of, whatever the season.
Whilst we don't want to mess with the classics too much (you really can't go wrong with a white tank top, after all), I've really noticed that the tank-top offering right now feels more eclectic than ever, so you can really pick and choose according to your tastes and wardrobe requirements. Personally, I've been enjoying the styles with asymmetric cuts or more interesting necklines below—as they offer a slightly more elevated spin on the classic tank and look just as good tucked into jeans as they do with matching trousers and strappy heels.
A colourful iteration is also an excellent feel-good option and ideal for anyone who doesn't buy into the neutral aesthetic which has dominated over the last few years. If your palette could use a lift, & Other Stories has a selection of elegant tank tops with playful shades and ribbed fabrics. Arket is another high-street brand with a strong selection of styles; this textured style in particular has caught my eye.
I couldn't let you scroll on, however, without highlighting my personal favourite if you're looking for an affordable, covers-all-bases style: H&M's Ribbed Vest Top (£7). It comes in six shades, a range of sizes (from XXS to 4XL) and is made from a thick, sturdy cotton. I'm not the only one who loves it, though, and it repeatedly sells out, so much so that it's become like gold dust to get hold of.
