I Thought This Jacket Trend Was Over—7 Sophisticated Spring Styles Proving Me Wrong
There's one silhouette that's stolen my attention this season and it's cropped jackets. Relaxed jackets and oversized blazers have had their fair share of time on the runways and the racks of your favourite brands, but if the street style set is telling us anything, it's that this clipped style will be the go-to outerwear choice.
I personally always layer up in looser fits and baggier jackets, especially it's cooler out. However, with spring on the horizon, the cropped jacket's short and sharp shape ultimately makes these pieces far more sleek than their lengthier counterparts.
And you can find them in almost any material and style—whether you love a classic tweed look or prefer the slick sheen of a biker jacket. What completely solidifies them as a staple is that they can slide neatly into countless outfits. Cropped jackets pair well with dresses, billowy trousers, micro shorts and wide-leg jeans, as Sienna Miller showcased at Chloé's spring/summer 2025 collection presentation at Paris Fashion Week back in September.
Whilst it's been some time since we've seen cropped styles fully command our attention, the new season has clearly started their resurgence. A clear hallmark of spring/summer 2025 trends, you can rest assured these will dominate across all major cultural capitals.
After Hailey Bieber (someone who is well versed in spring jacket trends), Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner have all worn iterations of the cropped jacket, making it an indisputable part of their off-duty wardrobe as a result. Ganni also recently released a trimmed trench coat version, proving that fashion stalwarts and labels alike are backing on cropped jackets to be the style du jour.
Yet, with so many iterations of cropped jackets available, I've curated a list of the best-dressed folks we follow on Instagram for picture-perfect examples of how to work the best cropped jackets into your wardrobe this spring and beyond. If you're curious to see the celebrity short-jacket outfit combinations to inspire your next or just seeking styling tips, uncover the best cropped jackets to shop now, ahead.
The Best Cropped Jackets to Shop and Style Now:
1. Denim
Style Notes: A cropped denim jacket is the perfect way to play with proportions, whether you're working with wide-leg jeans or a denim midi skirt. The boxy frame looks great with only a few buttons buttoned up, as Monikh has expertly done here, and it's a key piece for creating a chic double denim look.
Shop the Look:
Try the double-denim trend look by pairing this with your favourite light-wash jeans.
2. Trench
Style Notes: A trench will forever have a spot in our closets here at Who What Wear, but for a contemporary spin on the classic, a cropped jacket ticks all the boxes. This cropped trench is paired perfectly with white jeans and black boots, proving you can slot this into nearly any outfit where you'd wear a long jacket for a fresh take.
Shop the Look:
Burberry's classic beige is the most iconic trench out there, but this sliced iteration feels very modern.
The two-button closure makes this feel like a very well-thought-out cropped jacket.
Throw this on as you would a cape or bolero jacket to elevate even the most simple of outfits.
3. Leather
Style Notes: If you're after a sophisticated jacket that will outlast any trend cycle, look no further than a leather jacket—faux or real. If you're already the proud owner of multiple black leather jackets, this cropped brown version is sleek, minimal and so versatile. Whether you copy this look exactly and opt for chic barrel leg denim ensemble or layer it over a slip dress, this style brings an edgy touch to any look.
Shop the Look:
This unique jacket is actually 100% cotton, but it has a sleek coating that makes it look like leather.
4. Blazer
Style Notes: If your blazer has been feeling blasé as of late, switch it out for a cropped style instead. As this sophisticated outfit proves, you still retain the elevated air that comes from throwing a blazer on, but this rendition gives your outfit a fresher energy.
Shop the Look:
This blazer has a slightly slouchier make and opposing fabric on the cuffs.
5. Tweed
Style Notes: Tweed jackets are the definition of polished, and cropped ones feel even more so. If you typically shy away from these styles, it's worth testing the waters with a cropped one as it offers the same sharp structure but in a cut that feels fit for today. This ensemble nails the look, which can easily go from the office to dinner after, thanks to the addition of wide-leg trousers and flats.
Shop the Look:
Wear with white jeans, dark-wash jeans, wide-leg trousers and over dresses.
6. Biker
Style Notes: Similar to a cropped leather jacket is the timeless biker style. Where other leather jackets normally have buttons or more minimal silhouettes, these edgier versions have zippers, buckles and snaps. Learn from this modernised noughties-inspired look and pair your cropped biker with loose-fit, low-rise pants and a structured handbag.
Shop the Look:
This looks designer without the price to match.
A touch of luxury shopping never goes astray, and this is an investment you'll never get tired of.
Slightly more slouchy than the Khaite option but a fraction of the price.
7. Country
Style Notes: Barn jackets (otherwise known as wax or country jackets) are everywhere this season, but to make your own mark on the trend, opt for a cropped style. These look particularly chic with high-waisted trousers or over midi dresses.
Shop the Look:
I just love this £60 style from an unlikely high-street favourite!
Honestly, I'm shocked this isn't out of stock yet.
