The Simple Yet Sophisticated Knitwear Trend I've Spotted Fashion People in Europe Wearing

The cardigan was long considered one of the frumpiest things you could wear, but after an endorsement by editors, influencers, designers and celebs they’ve become a chic staple. The cult cardigan became a thing in 2019, thanks to Katie Holmes and her Khaite set and a string of other sellout cardis. Years later, the humble cardigan is still one of our favourite pieces to wear.

This thicker cardigan looks amazing with a matching maxi skirt and some pumps.

The key to making this item look relevant is to opt for soft-looking knitwear, which is as cosy as possible—the appeal of Katie Holmes’s infamous cardi was just how soft it is. Although you can’t beat beige, burgundy, and grey cardigans that are fitted to the body with small buttons, we’re also loving the jazzier style varieties available, too, and we’re also really into printed and checked cardigans if you want something a little more out of the ordinary.

Cardigans are the ultimate layering piece. Wear them over button-up shirts and under thicker outerwear on those chillier days.

Influencers across Europe can’t seem to get enough of them, either, as they keep wearing them in a multitude of ways. Keep scrolling to shop the best cardigans of 2025...
