I'm In My 50s, Have Tried a Ton of Basics, and Now Rely On These 7 Easy Items
When it comes to wardrobe staples, fashion editor, stylist and author of The Forever Wardrobe Anna Cascarina is something of an expert. After spending years working at various fashion magazines, Cascarina now dedicates her time as a stylist to helping women feel confident in their style, no matter their age, body type or budget. So when we were looking for advice on which essential basics really stand the test of time, who better to ask than this seasoned pro?
In her book The Forever Wardrobe, Cascarina advocates for the power of a capsule wardrobe, sharing her tips and tricks for fine-tuning your collection into an assortment of pieces that ensure you'll always find something you'll actually want to wear. The foundation of a capsule wardrobe is, of course, the staple styles, and Cascarina is a big fan of the classics, from the simple white t-shirt to the timeless trench coat. Here, Cascarina shares her pick of the seven must-have basics that she turns to time and time again—as well as an edit of top styles for each type.
1. Black Wide-Leg Trousers
Style Notes: "A pair of black wide leg trousers are probably my most worn item, especially during the colder months. These COS ones are my favourites. I’ve actually have two pairs in two different sizes so I can wear one pair slightly higher on the waist, and the other loose and relaxed!"
Shop Black Wide-Leg Trousers:
2. Merino Roll Neck Jumper
Style Notes: "A really good merino wool roll neck is a must have wardrobe staple. I have a selection in a few different colours. The fine wool means that it is a great layering piece under a jumper or cardigan as well as looking perfect on its own. I've got my eye on a M&S one that is 100% pure merino wool and also comes in 8 different colours. I love this vibrant pop of red."
Shop Merino Roll Neck Jumpers:
3. Trench Coat
Style Notes: "I have quite a few trench coats. The reason? Because they are so versatile, easy to layer and work hard for you all year round. I love one with a simple minimalist feel that is timeless and has a slight oversize fit which is perfect if you want to wear a chunky jumper underneath."
Shop Trench Coats:
The fit of this trench made it one of Anna's top picks—and gets bonus points for actually being water-repellent.
4. Straight Fit Jeans
Style Notes: "Denim is a contentious issue and can cause debates amongst many women. But for me, I love a straight fit jean in a rigid denim so that it gives enough to fit me perfectly. Agolde is one of my favourite brands and their 90’s Pinch Waist High Rise ones come in various washes. I also love Levi’s Ribcage and good old H&M. My top tip is to try not to wash your jeans for as long as possible. They’re much better unwashed!"
Shop Straight Fit Jeans:
The pair that so many influencers swear by.
5. White T-Shirt
Style Notes: "Even if you love print and colour, a couple of neutral options really help to bring an outfit together, especially if you’re wearing a really bright print skirt or trousers. A white tee is definitely an everyday essential and can be worn under a crew neck jumper, with a cardigan or blazer, under a strappy top or on it’s own with a classic pair of jeans."
Shop White T-Shirts:
"This classic organic cotton t-shirt from Arket is a great shape and a great price too."
M&S is a great go-to for easy staples like this classic white tee.
6. Cashmere Jumper
Style Notes: "Whether you like colour or neutrals, a couple of really good cashmere pieces are essential. It’s really worth spending the money on good quality cashmere as they will regulate your temperature keeping you cosy in the winter while not making you overheat."
Shop Cashmere Jumpers:
"This one by Me+Em is a beauty. The high neck and chunky ribbed detailing is gorgeous and it’s 100% cashmere."
Fashion insiders all know M&S is the best high street go-to for quality cashmere.
7. Blazers
Style Notes: "Yes, I’m a blazer girl, so I had to include it in my wardrobe staples. I find a blazer the perfect piece to instantly elevate your outfit to make it smarter and more contemporary. If you’re short try not to go too oversized and stick to a regular length that doesn’t swamp you. And if you have a bigger bust, look at single breasted styles with perhaps a nipped in waist to give shape."
Shop Blazers:
Effortlessly cool when worn open, this relaxed blazer gives a subtly fitted silhouette when buttoned up.
So many influencers sing the praises of Blazé Milano's structured blazers.
