The 4 Types of Sandals That Feel Really Relevant in 2019

Shopping for a new pair of sandals can feel a little overwhelming. Currently, there are over 300 results on Net-a-Porter and over 2500 results on ASOS, which is too much for even our editors to sift through and it's our jobs. There might be dozens of trending sandals and numerous trends around this summer, however, if what you are after is a simple guide to the new classics, then this is the story for you. We have identified the four types of sandals that feel the most relevant in 2019, including one statement pair, one practical pair, one fancy pair and one comeback pair. 

A year ago, I wouldn't have thought to include Velcro hiking sandals on a list of the four essential sandals— however, these have become a staple for fashion girls this summer. This is without a doubt the fastest-growing sandal trend. Another 2019 success story this summer is strappy '90s stilettos (the wedding shoe of the year). 1. VELCRO SANDALS

These Prada Velcro strappy sandals are arguably the most Instagrammed shoe of 2019, causing them to promptly sell out everywhere. However, these aren't the only Velcro hiking sandals to cause a shopping frenzy. Tevas have become the unlikely sandal to take off in the UK this summer.

2. STRAPPY SANDALS

If you've read any stories on Who What Wear recently, you're likely to have heard our editors talking about the stappy naked sandal. This '90s shoe is the leading trend this summer and can be surprisingly comfortable. "Strappy sandals can feel more comfortable than a court shoe," says Dina Gohil, MD, founder of DG Podiatrist Mayfair. "Having a strap around the ankle can provide more support, which helps the foot feel more secure. Secondly, having an additional strap in the middle section of the foot provides mid-foot support, which also adds more stability."

3. LEATHER SLIDERS

A pair of leather sliders always look expensive, whether you go for a pair of Hermès Oran sandals or Saint Laurent Tribute Nu Pieds or a high-street version. Dune's and Zara's tan sandals have become classics they release every year. Other favourites include ATP's cut-out sandals, Ancient Greek's Desmos slides and Chloe's C logo slides. However much you spend, these always look expensive.

4. FLIP-FLOPS

Thanks to Scandinavian influencers, flip-flops have made a big comeback this year. They might give you horrible blisters in between your toes, get caught under other people's shoes constantly and expose a lot of foot to the street, but they are also a simple classic that go with anything. If you aren't ready for colourful rubber versions, there are lots of chic leather versions this year from COS, Staud and TKees.
