This Topshop Buy Is Officially the Coolest Way to Wear Leggings in 2020
For anyone who grew up in the '90s, there's a fair chance you'll be as fearful as I am about the return of leggings. The last time I wore a pair out of the house (aside from the gym), they were paired with a distressed denim miniskirt and a lace-trimmed cami top (very Marissa from The O.C.). Well, the 2020 iteration could not be more different. The most popular style right now features a split hemline and is typically styled with minimalist separates, such as oversized blazers and shirts.
While I appreciate the chic ways influencers and fashion editors have interpreted the trend, I'm still ambivalent about wearing leggings as trousers. I think it's partly due to the stretchy waistband that can sit awkwardly with tucked-in tops. Plus, there's also a risk you will end up with the dreaded VPL situation.
This is where Topshop's split-hem Joni jeans come in. Offering the fit of a legging (plus the desirable split hem detail) but featuring thicker fabric and a proper button and zip fastening, they're the perfect middle ground for those who want the legging look without feeling naked.
I love how Topshop have styled the jeans on its site with a printed long-sleeved top, oversized blazer and strappy heels. I think a roomy silhouette is needed to balance out the jeans' streamlined fit, so that's why I've styled my pair with a beige blazer from Arket and a collared ruffle shirt. I haven't worn skinnies for some time, but this pair might just tempt me over to the dark side. Scroll down to see my outfit and shop the style.
