I Just Discovered These Affordable Yet Expensive-Looking Basics, and I'm Hooked
As much as flashy, trendy items are quick to grab my attention, it's the basics that do the actual heavy lifting in my closet. Last summer, my daily uniform consisted of mostly simple white tank tops and easy oversize button-downs, so in that same vein, I'm putting all the focus on basics again for my cool-weather wardrobe. I've waded through my fair share of pricey, luxurious pieces to basics on the penny-pinching cheap end, but isn't it rewarding when you can find a happy medium?
Enter Who What Wear's latest fall offering at Target. Of course, there are trend-forward pieces included, such as faux-leather dresses and matching sets, but the collection is also a jackpot for streamlined basics that only look expensive. Priced at under $40, they're on the more affordable side but at the same time won't disintegrate after one wash cycle. So yes, that means I'm stocking up on all the sweaters and blazers right now. Below, I've rounded up my favorite luxe-looking (and affordable) essentials to keep your assortment of fall basics fresh. Keep scrolling to see them all.
A houndstooth coat is a nonnegotiable for me during fall. This one straddles the line between a light jacket and a blazer, so it's really like a two-in-one.
Take a styling cue from above, and pair this with your favorite leather piece.
Side buttons transform these from basic sweatpants to cool sweatpants.
Bet you've never seen a coat this fun. While unique, it's still muted enough to wear everyday—from grocery store trips to commutes to the office.
Wear this with straight-leg jeans and casual canvas sneakers.
Although it's a floral print, the ease of wearing it qualifies this as a basic (according to me).
Fall to me is all about midi dresses, and I certainly want to wear this on repeat.

Indya Brown is a fashion editor, stylist, and writer living in Los Angeles. While going to school at Columbia University in New York City, she got her feet wet in the fashion industry interning at Elle magazine, Harper's Bazaar, and New York magazine's The Cut. After graduating in 2016, she joined The Cut as a fashion assistant, eventually working her way up to fashion editor. There, she worked on a multitude of projects, including styling inbook feature stories for New York magazine's print issue, writing and pitching market stories for The Cut, and serving as fashion lead for The Cut's branded content. While New York has been her home for over 10 years, she moved to Los Angeles in the midst of the pandemic in 2020 for a new chapter. Now she is a fashion market editor for Who What Wear, focusing on emerging designers, rising trends on and off the internet, interior design, and BIPOC creatives and brands. Aside from her duties as a fashion market editor, Brown is also a freelance stylist and writer, working on national print and video commercial campaigns for Sephora, The Independent, and Cadillac. Her bylines also include Harper's Bazaar, Vox, and The New York Times. But once the computer goes down and the emails turn off, she's likely eating her way through Koreatown, hunting down vintage furniture, scoping out new outrageous nail designs to try, or taking a hot cycling class.
