I Got Rid of Tons of Spring Clothes to Make Room For This Season's Staples

I think it's safe to say that most people don't have an infinite amount of space in their closets. And in my case, the hanger shortage issue is real. But I love to shop and am always looking to refresh my collection of basics and try new trends each season. So instead of taking over the closet in my guest bedroom as well, I opt to clean out my closet each spring and fall (at least) to make way for new things to add to my wardrobe. It's challenging for an indecisive person such as myself but it also feels great to let go of things that are taking up precious closet space.

This season, I've been very tempted by the staples being offered at the likes of Mango, Zara, and Reformation, to name a few. And staples don't have to mean just boring basics. They can also be trends that you'll wear repeatedly throughout the season (and perhaps even beyond). So now that I have some available retail space in my closet, here are the spring staples I'm shopping for. Read on to join me.

Removed: Round-Toe Flats

Adding: Flatform Flip-Flops

Round-toe shoes have been eclipsed by square-toe shoes in recent seasons. And while I'm sure round toes will be back, I'm letting some go. The spring shoe trend I'm excited to put in their place is flatform flip-flops.

Removed: Skinny Jeans

Adding: Loose Jeans

I'm sure you've heard all you need to hear about the skinny jeans vs. baggy jeans debate. For now, I'm only buying loose jeans so I'll be weeding out the skinny jeans that I admittedly haven't worn in years.

Removed: Boho Dresses

Adding: Romantic Dresses

I guess we have Bridgerton to thank for this one. Instead of the breezy boho dresses of seasons past, dresses with puffed sleeves, empire waistbands, and pretty toile prints have become the style we're all favoring.

Removed: Tie-Dye Tees

Adding: Merch Tees

It seems we've reached peak tie-dye, so what's next? I don't know about you but I love a merch T-shirt and am always on the hunt for fresh logos.

Removed: Cut-Off Shorts

Adding: Miniskirts

Cut-offs have been a wardrobe staple of mine for years, but I'm trading some of my pairs in for more of-the-moment pieces, like miniskirts. They were all over the S/S 21 runways and exciting iterations are being produced by tons of brands.

Removed: Neutrals

Adding: Yellow

A wardrobe can't live on colorful pieces alone, but I'm also bored from wearing all neutrals this winter. I'm planning on incorporating the latest color trends into my wardrobe, starting with pale yellow.

Removed: Sporty Slides

Adding: Clogs

Ever since I fell down a flight of stairs wearing a pair of clogs approximately 16 years ago, I've been hesitant to reembrace them, but I think this is the year. They're one of the biggest shoe trends of the season, so I'm clearing out some of my dated rubber slides to make room for them on my shelves.

Removed: Denim Jackets

Adding: Loose Blazers

An entire section of my closet is admittedly dedicated to denim jackets and it's a bit much. I only wear a couple of them, so I think I'm due for an edit. In their place, I'm currently shopping for loose blazers, which you can't have too many of these days.

Next up, the ageless spring capsule wardrobe.
