At this time of year, many of us overhaul various areas of our lives. Spring cleaning now applies to everything, from our homes and wardrobes through to our emotional boundaries and social media follows, and there's something about the warmer weather and gloriously long(er) days that brings out the urge for proactive change. However, one thing that we often forget to check for a well-timed review is our skincare routine.
Skin is temperamental, and it’s affected by so many factors, and yes, that always includes seasonal changes. Increased UV-ray exposure and the rising temperature can have an impact on your skin, and not necessarily a good one.
While layering serums, oils and heavier balms served us well during the coldest moments in winter, the warmer months call for a radically different approach. This means putting in place a revised routine, and who better to help than a dermatologist? We spoke to Justine Kluk, a consultant dermatologist and skincare expert, for her top tips when it comes to spring cleaning your skincare routine. So now it's time to study hard and pay attention!
1. Apply Sunscreen Daily
SPF is an everyday must, regardless of the weather. Kluk says, "Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or 50 for optimal protection from sunburn, skin cancer and premature skin ageing. 2. Regularly Top Up Your SPF
"Top up your sunscreen every couple of hours, especially after swimming, sweating or towelling off,” says Kluk. Top tip: Remember that the number part of your SPF is an indication of how long you’re protected for, not the strength of the sunscreen as most commonly perceived.
3. Incorporate a Vitamin C Into Your Routine
"If you struggle with dull skin and dark marks such as melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, spring and summer are the times to be especially diligent with your skincare routine,” says Kluk. Vitamin C is known for its brightening and glow-boosting properties. It is a potent antioxidant and works well layered under your morning SPF.

4. Stay in the Shade

"Seek shade between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun is directly overhead,” advises Kluk. "Wear sunglasses and a broad-rimmed sun hat for added protection to your face, neck and ears.”
5. Introduce Change Slowly
It’s tempting to completely overhaul your skincare routine and introduce several changes all at once, but the skin can be particularly sensitive.
