If you're looking for a practical pair, two-strap chunky Birkenstocks, rope sandals and elegant sliders are the most laid-back styles you can still feel chic in, while on the other end of the sandal spectrum there are more adventurous ideas for open-toe trailblazers: PVC sandals (yes, really), white strappy heels and logo-flashing mules are just waiting to be Instagrammed.

1. Rope Sandals
Style Notes: These rope sandals by Nomadic State of Mind are the holiday sandals of the year, as they have featured in beach pictures by super influencers including Lucy Williams and Sara of Collage Vintage.
2. Leather toe ring
Style Notes: Like it or not, the toe-ring sandal is back. The coolest pairs are super minimal leather sandals with one strap across the foot and a strap around the toe. But be warned, these are sandals that draw even more attention to chipped toenail polish.

3. The practical two-strap sandal
Style Notes: Practical sandals are also having a moment—Chanel has even created Birkenstock-esque sandals with velcro. If you're a proud Birkenstock wearer, this summer it's all about the chunky two-strap styles, as shown by Pandora in her Joseph sandals and Dodo Bar Or skirt.
4. PVC Sandals
Style Notes: This is a trend Carrie Bradshaw would be all over right now. Maryam Nassir Zadeh has brought back '00s strappy plastic sandals, but if you can't spend over £400 on one pair of shoes, Zara has a great alternative for £26.
5. Chunky Flatforms
Style Notes: Flatforms are one of the most divisive summer shoes, but they are poised to be everywhere, as the likes of Gucci, Prada and Stella McCartney are championing these clompy soles.

6. Elegant Slides
Style Notes: This summer, slides have had a total makeover with everything from feather-adorned sliders to satin styles with oversize bows, but our favourites are the more simple styles in black leather (the Hermès Oran sandals being the dream purchase.)
7. Logo Slip-Ons
Style Notes: When it comes to It sandals, Dior's sliders with DIOR written across the strap are causing the most buzz. Just like T-shirts, it's all about flashing designer logos wherever you can right now…
8. White strappy sandals
Style Notes: If you've looked in the shoe departments of Zara or Mango recently, you'll notice that when it comes to heeled sandals, it's all about white block heels with lots of straps, like the pair worn by Gilda Ambrosio above.
