8 "Risky" Trends We're Not Afraid to Try This Year, Thanks to Celebs
As fashion editors, we're typically not afraid of a little sartorial adventure. Sure, we all have our own personal styles (I personally tend to stick to the more elevated basic looks), but overall, we're down to test out fresh trends that may be out of our typical comfort zones. And sometimes, said trends just so happen to be "riskier" than others out there. You know, trends like the J.Lo-approved bodysuit-with-leggings look.
On that celebrity style note, I thought I'd actually dig a little deeper into the forward celeb-endorsed trends my fellow editors are interested in trying this year. You know, to have a little fun and perhaps inspire your 2021 shopping list. Of course, some may not be your style, but there are also a few looks ahead that could be worth a try. With all that in mind, keep scrolling to check out the trends we're ready to test out, complete with celeb inspo. Plus, shop the best iterations of each look.
"I can't remember when was the last time I tucked my jeans or pants into boots, but one look at this outfit on Kendall and I'm heading home to try it."—Nicole Akhtarzad Eshaghpour, senior market editor
On Kendall Jenner: Velvet Canyon Zou Bisous Sunglasses ($260); Louis Vuitton bag; Prada boots
Shop Jeans and Boots
"I have a hunch that spring 2021 will be all about the exposed neckline, and it's a trend I'm ready to take on. I especially love how Rosie Huntington-Whiteley recently wore it with this Versace blazer. I'll be following her lead by adopting more sweetheart necklines."—Kristen Nichols, managing editor
On Rosie Huntington-Whiteley: Versace jacket and pants; Jimmy Choo heels
Shop Pieces With Sweetheart-Necklines
I'm typically a basic black ankle-boot person, but the extra-chunky moto boots that have taken the fashion world by storm (including the mid-calf Prada boots Ciara is wearing here) are definitely of interest to bring a cool and forward twist to my 2021 looks.
On Ciara: Prada boots
Shop Moto Boots
"I'm intrigued by the idea of wearing lingerie as outerwear. It's a trend we saw on the spring runways at Dion Lee and Marina Moscone, and as 'risky' as it may be, I think Bella Hadid's corset layered over a plain tank or button-down is the approachable way I'll be trying it out in 2021."—Anna LaPlaca, associate editor
On Bella Hadid: Fenty jacket and pants
Shop Corset Tops and Corset-Detailed Tops
"This is obviously not winter-appropriate, but if bike shorts are back with a vengeance next spring and summer, I'll experiment with wearing them under a minidress (although I definitely can't promise I'll look as cool as Irina Shayk did)."—Allyson Payer, senior editor
On Irina Shayk: Reformation dress; Levi's jacket; Dr. Martens boots
Shop Bike Shorts
"Next year, I really want to channel Haley Bieber as much as possible. There—I said it. I think she takes just the right amount of risks while somehow always looking classy. I just about died when I saw her wear this T-shirt dress with knee-high boots and a leather blazer. So long as I have the appropriate counterparts, I plan on attempting wearing large T-shirts as dresses in 2021."—Lauren Eggertsen, senior editor
On Hailey Bieber: J Brand jacket; MM6 Maison Margiela T-Shirt ($192); Jacquemus boots
Shop T-Shirt Dresses
"Katie Holmes' style game is strong this season (and there's no doubt I've been stealing most of her looks for myself!). The next look I'll be attempting to copy from her? The long leather shorts trend, which I may even wear with those cool leopard-print boots if I'm feeling fearless."—Judith Jones, market editor
On Katie Holmes: Max Mara Teddy Icon Coat ($3690); Frame Leather Culottes in Noir ($825); Khaite Zebra-Print Calf Hair Knee Boots ($1800)
Shop Leather Shorts
"As it stands, I currently own zero items that would fall into the category of party pants, but thanks to Selena Gomez's amazing JW Anderson gold and glittery wide-leg trousers, I'm bound and determined to own a pair next year."—Erin Fitzpatrick, senior news editor
On Selena Gomez: Wardrobe.NYC Turtleneck ($450) and Trench Coat ($1137); JW Anderson pants; Louis Vuitton boots
Shop Metallic Trousers
