Princess Diana's Lingerie-Inspired Met Gala Dress Is Still Trending in 2022

Who's ready for the 2022 Met Gala? Before we get to the first Monday in May, let's take a second to revisit one of the event's most memorable moments of all time: Princess Diana's one and only visit in 1996. The royal had already established herself as a fashion icon, so no doubt fans were excited to see her grace the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

For the occasion, Princess Diana went with a lingerie-inspired John Galliano for Dior satin slip dress with lace trim—a classic item that's still just as stylish in 2022 as it was back then. Diana wore her gown with a Lady Dior bag, a stunning statement pearl choker necklace—another '90s trend that's back with a vengeance—and sapphire earrings that have since been passed down to Kate Middleton. There's no doubt that Princess Diana's fashionable, charitable legacy lives on to this day. Scroll down to revisit what Princess Diana wore to the Met Gala in 1996, and shop the trend.

Erin got her start as a Who What Wear intern over 13 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of Associate Director of Fashion News (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
