"Daytime Princess Di" Is How I'm Dressing to Look Super Expensive
The impression Princess Diana left on fashion is undeniable. From her outfits that ascribed to the confines of royal dress codes to her looks that ignored the rules, the fashion legacy she left behind continues to be just as relevant today. Just look to Virgil Abloh, whose S/S18 Off-White collection was timed with the 20th anniversary of the Princess of Wales’ passing. Inspired by some of her most iconic looks, he sent pieces down the runway like a voluminous spotted top she was photographed wearing to a polo match in 1983.
Princess Diana's style has been the point of inspiration for countless designers, including this look that was reinterpreted by Virgil Abloh for his S/S18 Off-White collection.
Kate Middleton's Nod to Princess Diana
More evidence of her influence is clear in recent collections from Alessandra Rich, who has named Princess Di as one of the fashion muses who inspires her designs. Perhaps for this reason, she has become a label of choice among royals including Kate Middleton who stepped out in May 2019 wearing one of her dresses. The look instantly recalls a collared polka dot dress Princess Diana wore in 1985.
How I'm Interpreting The Look
Beyond runway collections and the wardrobes of today’s royals, I’ve observed how Princess Diana’s style is impacting outfits on the street style scene, as well as it’s effect on my wardrobe. Her daytime looks—built around items like Chanel skirt suits and tailored dresses—defined her polished sense of style and have recently become staples in my closet. Here, see my personal take on Princess Di style.
Skirt suits were a regular outfit formula for Princess Diana, like this look from 1995.
Here's my take on "Daytime Princess Di," wearing a two-piece tweed skirt suit. To me, the look feels classic and timeless but also modern and cool. It's less about wearing something that feels trendy and new, and more about finding a way to reinterpret the Princess Di's imprint on style that still remains relevant to this day.
