5 Trends to Buy for Fall, According to a Shopping Expert
Looking ahead to fall, what are the most stylish pieces to add to your closet that are worth the investment? I spoke with Net-a-Porter’s global buying director, Elizabeth von der Goltz, to get her take on the trends that have legs for fall that you can feel confident putting your money behind. Traveling the globe to see the latest collections at runway shows and meeting with on-the-rise designers for her job, she’s an expert in predicting what will be cool, so you know you can trust what she tells you to buy.
For the months ahead, von der Goltz notes that we’ll be seeing a shift in fashion. "An overarching mood of ‘all grown-up’ is trending for F/W 19, and we’ve experienced this for the past few seasons," von der Goltz explains, "We’re seeing more head-to-toe polished looks with a return to femininity. This trend has now come in full circle; as women, we no longer need notes of masculinity to feel powerful when getting dressed.”
How does that translate to trends and the pieces insiders will be wearing? Ahead, von der Goltz is weighing in on the five key trends to buy for fall. Her picks include everything from the must-buy shoe silhouette that’s already picking up steam to the new way everyone will be wearing leather to why sustainable fashion is more important than ever. Go on to read about the popular fall fashion trends to invest in now.
Sophisticated Looks
"At the forefront of F/W 19, we saw fashion powerhouses such as Loewe and Bottega Veneta, along with rising stars, stepping up into a more sophisticated space. We saw brands such as Khaite and Jacquemus evolve their looks with the best craftsmanship and techniques with structured blazers, long tailored trousers and soft knits." — Elizabeth von de Goltz
Shop the trend:
Leather Luxe
According to von der Goltz, sophisticated leather (and vagan leather) pieces spotted from the runways will translate to one of the most important trends for fall.
Shop the trend:
Square-Toed Shoes and Boots
"As an evolution of The Row's barely-there sandal, we’re seeing a lot of square-toed shoes and boots for this season by brands such as By Far, Gianvito Rossi, Wandler’s new shoe line, and Bottega Veneta." —Elizabeth von der Goltz
Shop the trend:
Head Accessories
When it comes to accessories, von der Goltz noted that it's all about pieces for the hair—whether it's embellished clips, padded headbands, or adorned turbans.
Sustainability
"The launch of Net Sustain is an important milestone in our sustainability journey at Net-a-Porter. Our Net Sustain edit is a great way to shop brands that fit within a defined criteria—from considered materials and processes to reducing waste in their supply chain." — Elizabeth von der Goltz
