It's Me, Not You: 6 Current Trends I'm Officially Splitting Up With
Breakups are hard—especially when you’ve invested time, money, and a plethora of Insta Stories on your new companion. Unfortunately, no matter how hard you try and give it a shot, sometimes you and the object of your affection simply just don’t mesh.
This sentiment holds true with some of the trends I’ve bought into… I tried to love you, bike shorts, but you just weren’t the right fit. I really wanted us to be together forever, neon, but you’re just not my type. Don’t get me wrong: I know you’re really well suited to other people; all I can say is it’s me, not you.
This summer, I’m finally splitting up with some of the trends I’m always avoiding in my wardrobe. It’s hard to say goodbye, but don't you always feel better once it’s done? Scroll below to take a peek at the trends I’m ditching this summer (and what I’m swiping right on instead)!
Goodbye: Tight Bike Shorts
Hello: Loose Long Shorts
I know, I know: Bike shorts are having a major moment this season, with fashion girls sporting them with chic blazers for an unexpectedly cool look. I’ve tried, but I cannot bring myself to squeeze into anything that tight and short. Instead, I’m wearing my blazer with looser long shorts instead for an equally refreshing summer look.

Goodbye: Neon
Hello: Pistachio
Dressing like a highlighter may be the coolest thing to do right now, but for someone who mostly dresses in neutrals, it’s tough for me stomach. I’m opting for subtler sage green and pistachio hues that was seen all over the S/S 19 and F/W 19 runways.
Shop the trend:
Goodbye: High-Leg String Bikinis
Hello: Statement Swimsuits
Simple string bikinis are always good to have on hand for an afternoon spent working on your tan, but the retro high-leg bikini trend doesn’t do anything for me. I’m taking a break from the itsy-bitsy bikini and buying an Insta-worthy statement swimsuit in bold florals or of-the-moment zebra prints instead—guaranteed to elicit plenty of compliments.
Shop the trend:
Goodbye: Gingham Dress
Hello: Floral-Print Dress
It’s not that I want to kick gingham to the curb—in fact, I’m supremely fond of the sweet summery checks—but this season, we are on a break. Instead, I can’t get enough of chic, trending floral-print dresses (they’re perfect for every soirée on my summer calendar).
Shop the trend:
Goodbye: Fanny Packs
Hello: Natural Bags
I’ve been obsessed with belt bags (aka fanny packs) ever since they first sashayed down the runways a few years back, and while they’re still a hot trend right now, I’m taking some time apart from the practical bag and opting for basket bags.
Shop the trend:
Goodbye: Tiny Sunglasses
Hello: Shield Sunglasses
I’m officially ready to say sayonara to my tiny sunglasses. (Mindy Kaling was onto something.) I’ll be replacing them with trendy oversize shield sunglasses that are everywhere right now—perfect for concealing my under-eye bags in style!
