We're Tossing These 6 Summer Trends for These 6 Effortless Staples
Everyone knows that summer is the season of vibrance, excitement, and fun, and as fashion editors, we're taking that to the next level. If you love personal style as much as we do, you certainly find joy in this time of refreshing your wardrobe and perhaps even adopting a new aesthetic for the sunny days ahead. We're getting a head start on curating what makes sense for our summer wardrobes, and with timeless style in mind, we're ditching overhyped trends and shopping more omnipresent fashion staples.
In my unabashed curiosity, I couldn't resist asking my co-workers about their take on this season's summer fashion trends. From last year's must-have items to outdated color schemes, they're setting aside these trends to make way for what truly embodies sophistication in summer style.
Skipping: Capri Pants
Shopping: Full Midi Skirt
"Capri pants look so chic on some people, but I don't think I can do it. Maybe it's my height (short), but they just don't work for me. Instead, I'll be wearing those full midi skirts that are impossible to not look elegant in."
Skipping: Short Shorts
Shopping: Bermuda-Length Styles
"I've never really been into short-inseam short styles. Whether it's cutoffs or underwear-like micro shorts, I'm personally staying far away. I am, however, embracing pieces with longer inseams that have more elevated details like pleats and finished hems."
Skipping: Bubble Hems
Shopping: A-Line Silhouettes
"Bubble hems are on the rise, and while I wore the skirts and dresses when they appeared in the 2000s, I'm not ready to embrace them again quite yet. On the other hand, I've been gravitating toward A-line silhouettes and will be adding the elegant shape into my closet this summer."
Skipping: Naked Dresses
Shopping: Linen Everything
"Sorry, but the ever-present naked dress trend is just not for me. While it works for many people, it's not as timeless as I'd like. Instead of going sheer, I'm all about white linen pieces for summer because they feel so classic and effortless. Linen is perfect for warm weather because it's lightweight and keeps you cool by wicking away sweat."
Skipping: V-Neck Vests
Shopping: Halter Tops
"Although V-neck vests (or any type of vest, in general) is often a summer staple for our team, it's a cut I personally don't love on myself. Sure, they're good for necklace stacking and for high-heat days, but in lieu of the angular, deep-V cut, I'm opting for simple, timeless halters this summer. Linen, cotton, lycra, whatever—I can't get my hands off of the style."
Skipping: Trucker Hat
Shopping: Logoless Bags
I'm seeing color-block trucker hats everywhere lately, and while I love the way that they look on other people, they're just not quite the right look on me. I am really investing all of my time and money in seeking timeless pieces and currently logoless bags have completely won me over. I just can't get enough of how classic they are.
Sierra Mayhew was always destined to work in fashion, but she didn't know it at first. Growing up with no choice but to wear a rotation of school uniforms and activewear, her love for fashion really blossomed when she moved away for college and was able to finally define her very own personal style. Shortly thereafter, she interned at Elle magazine and instantly knew that editorial was for her. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, she worked for ShopBazaar, contributing regularly to Bazaar.com, and finally made her way to Who What Wear, where she is an associate editor. When she’s not working, you can catch her always trying to catch a flight, trying the latest fitness craze in New York City, or exploring luxury vintage boutiques.
