I recently made a cross-country move from Los Angeles to NYC. Though I've lived in New York before and always make of point of visiting throughout the year, the city is constantly changing. Every corner has new restaurants and coffee shops popping up. There are always new art exhibitions and buzzy neighborhoods to visit. And the looks on the streets and among the fashion crowd are constantly in flux.

As I'm getting settled in NYC, I've started thinking about the pieces my wardrobe is missing. Not only am I missing seasonal fall/winter pieces that I didn't need in L.A., but I've also noticed other items that are glaringly absent in my NYC wardrobe that I'll need for my new lifestyle. A big everyday tote that can carry my laptop to the office and events is at the top of my list. Flats are another practical piece I need to ramp up my wardrobe, but they're also decidedly of the moment. The fashion set is gravitating toward everything from simple ballerinas to mesh styles. Ahead, see the NYC wardrobe shopping finds I have on my list right now.

A Big Tote Bag

Large totes have been on-trend for many seasons running, but now that I've landed in NYC, I've realized they are a practical necessity. While I'm not looking for anything of the XXL variety, I'm eyeing pieces that can fit a laptop for the office and anything else I might need for the day.

Cool Commuter Flats

Simply put, flats are the moment. They're winning out over heels right now, and fashion people can't get enough of the cool flats on the market. Every designer seems to have their own spin on them, which is great news for commuters like myself.

Directional Denim

Do I have a robust collection of denim already? Yes. Do I now have a running list of new denim items I want in my closet? Also yes. Since arriving in NYC, I've spotted pieces such as long tailored shorts, maxi skirts, and embellished jackets that haven't made their way into my closet yet, and now, I'm inspired to make some new purchases.

Really Great Accessories

At the Who What Wear office in NYC, I noticed that our editors have largely been sticking to pared-back clothing staples and adding personality to their looks with accessories. For some, it's big statement earrings. For others, it's a timeless investment watch worn every day.

Something Unexpected

Nothing makes me think of NYC style more than something unexpected. Whether it's Tory Burch's sheer skirt that went viral when it debuted on the runway or a pair of fingerless gloves, New York is the place to experiment with new trends and fun styling ideas.

Transitional Knits

In L.A., I got away with wearing the same outfits year-round and didn't have a need for many cold weather pieces. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, I'll be ordering some transitional knits that I can wear throughout fall and winter.
