Fashion month kicked off in New York last week for the F/W 23 collections. While there is much to discuss about the trends and standout looks at the runway shows, the street style scene always provides just as much inspiration as fashion insiders interpret the latest pieces and styling ideas into their personal wardrobes.

Ahead of New York Fashion Week, I asked industry experts to share their fashion month shopping list and the items they were planning to wear to this season, and many of their picks predicted the street style trends that have been unfolding—including everything from maxi coats to punchy red accessories. But there is much more we’re starting to see as fashion month starts. Here, see six standout trends from New York Fashion Week we spotted on the most stylish attendees, and shop our edit of pieces to integrate them into your wardrobe.

Maxi Coats

Long, floor-sweeping coats are one of the trends that were prominent in the S/S 23 runway shows, including the collections of brands such as Saint Laurent, The Row, and Beare Park. Showgoers embraced the movement to longer hemlines, pairing maxi coats with everything from slip skirts to denim.

A Hint of Red

Red was the major color that swept the street style scene in NYC. What was interesting was that it was typically worn as a smaller detail, such as a red turtleneck layered underneath a trench or a bright pair of socks with slingbacks.

White Jeans

White jeans may seem like a summer staple, but they felt incredibly fresh on the NYC style set at fashion week. Styled with winter looks that incorporated faux-fur coats, turtlenecks, and sporty sneakers, they add an element of polish and crispness.

Quiet-Luxury Bags

This year has seen a rise in pared-back, quiet-luxury bags, and that was echoed on the street style scene in NYC, where bags including Bottega Veneta Intrecciato woven styles and Savette leather bags stood out.

Layered Neutrals

Winter layers took shape in the form of neutrals such as beige, brown, and black. Standout pieces included jackets with built-in scarves, while styling tricks such as adding a sweater over a coat added points of interest to the looks.

Denim Maxi Skirts

Coats aren't the only piece that has a growing hemline—skirts are similarly getting longer, which is a notable contrast to the micro miniskirts that took over in 2022. Maxi skirts were spotted in many forms, but denim versions in particular stood out.
