I'm an NYC Editor and Just Got Back From L.A.—5 Items That Earned Me Compliments
Picture this: A frantic woman attempting to check her bag at the airport discovers that, despite many precautions, her luggage is weighing in at about 58 pounds—just over the airport guidelines. She rapidly throws a pair of chunky boots, a statement sweater, and even a blow-dryer into her carry-on in an attempt to make her flight on time and bring all of her belongings on board. Hey, we've all been there. There was a time when that once was a regular occurrence for me, but luckily, things have changed. I've recently learned to tap into my fashion-editor knowledge bank and am here to share with you the pieces I pack that can be worn in so many ways that you'll only need a few additional items. Oh yeah, they'll also earn you quite a few compliments along the way.
I headed to Los Angeles last week for a work trip that involved busy days of collaborating with other editors, so naturally, I was sure to dress the part. My packing list became a capsule wardrobe tailored toward the most versatile 2022 trends that I used to create endless L.A. outfits and that I plan to also consider for weekends in NYC. Think upgraded twists and elevated takes on the not-so-basic basics that will get you very far as you style out your favorite looks. These pieces are so good, and all I needed was a carry-on to get me to L.A. and back. Keep scrolling to discover these essential items and how I styled them.
The Blank Canvas
If you've ever taken a glance at the Who What Wear home page, I'm sure you picked up on the fact that all of our editors believe in the power of a good basic. I'm no exception to the rule. Styling looks for my Los Angeles trip started with rounding up my favorite wardrobe staples followed by selecting statement pieces to match. With this simple strategy, I had outfits galore and could have lasted for weeks with just my carry-on.

When I learned that buying two or more Who What Wear Collection essentials will get me 20% off, I immediately added this elevated knit to my cart.
Adding a pop of color to a warmer style makes surviving the sudden cold of L.A. nights much more exciting.
Cardi Party
We love a good oversize cardigan, but after reviewing the spring 2022 runways, it's obvious to me that the times are changing. I always have to try a trend IRL before writing about it, so of course, this viral Jacquemus cardigan made it into my suitcase for a little test-drive. I have a bigger bust, so this trend made me a bit nervous, but I learned quickly that with the right layering it's something anyone can pull off.

Layered over a tank, this is my pick for a day of sightseeing, but I'd bare it all for a night out.
Daydreaming about this knit paired with the loose-fitting trousers I just added to my cart.
Day 'N' Night
No matter where you are, you need a day-to-night dress that removes the stress of getting ready—a dress where just a simple swap of accessories is all you need to meet your friends for dinner and dance the night away. The below fashion finds will do the trick.

I've been dreaming about this dress since September, and it might be time for me to pull the plug.
The twisted sleeves and universally flattering colorway will make this dress a standout among your other midis.
Swap out those boots for heels and you're ready for wherever the night takes you.
Baggy Pants
If you haven't caught on yet, our 2022 motto is "the baggier the better," and that's exactly what loose-fitting pants do for us. They give off an effortless cool-girl vibe without even trying. Here's a shopping hack: If you're having a hard time tapping into this trend, try searching for wide-leg pants and sizing up.

If any of my WWW co-workers vouch for an item, I know it's going to be good.
Leather Weather
Planning your winter wardrobe in L.A. can be hard since the weather doesn't really ever cool down for good. Expect a juxtaposition of warm days with cold nights and sudden ups and downs this time of year. That's why leather shorts were an essential item on my packing list. They gave off fall and winter vibes without keeping me too warm.

This buttery-soft leather piece also comes with a matching vest.

One of my favorite packing tips is stuffing socks and lingerie into a bag to maintain its shape in my suitcase.
Being on your feet all day while exploring a city requires proper footwear, and you know we WWW editors have a thing for these sneakers.
