I Just Assembled the Perfect London Capsule Wardrobe With 14 Easy Pieces
When the term, ‘capsule wardrobe’ first entered our collective consciousness, it seemed like a radical idea. Along with the suggestion of a considered, streamlined wardrobe came the implication that we should overhaul our shopping habits. When I first heard about it, as a newly-salaried graduate with money to spend on clothes for the first time in my life, I quickly disregarded the idea.
But in 2024, my attitude to shopping has completely changed and I’ve naturally gravitated towards a capsule-like wardrobe. I’m definitely not alone in adopting a more thoughtful approach; many of the influencers and celebrities whose style I admire favour classic, versatile pieces that are easy to mix and match. Between the environmental impact of fashion and the short-lived nature of trends, there's a strong case to be made for focusing on timeless designs crafted from high-quality materials.
If you're a Londoner who's starting your journey towards a capsule closet, I know exactly where you should start. Taking the unpredictable UK climate and perennial Brit-girl favourites into consideration, I've curated the perfect beginner's capsule—comprised of just 14 easy-to-style, trend-defying essentials. Scroll on to see and shop.
LONDON CAPSULE WARDROBE:
1. Suede Tote
Style Notes: When winter comes around, the London fashion set lives in suede. Although suede blazers, boots and bombers remain popular, for 2024 Londoners have set their sights on suede totes to elevate their cold-weather outfits.
Shop the Look:
2. Biker Boots
Style Notes: In London, fashion people have been taking on the chillier weather by swapping out their summery ballet flats for biker boots. Pairing them with anything from maxi skirts, to baggy jeans and knitted dresses, this classic style has a myriad of styling possibilities.
Shop the Look:
3. Black Blazer
Style Notes: In London, a blazer is the go-to layer whenever there's a nip in the air. The black variety is particularly popular; not only does it go with everything, but it also adds a smart spin to even the most basic outfits.
Shop the Look:
This relaxed iteration is perfect for weekend styling.
4. Satin Skirt
Style Notes: After you notice one silky slip skirt London, you'll suddenly see them everywhere you go. Our Deputy Editor Maxine makes a strong case for adding this versatile staple to your capsule wardrobe.
Shop the Look:
It should come as no surprise that & Other Stories has nailed this staple.
5. Knitted Vest
Style Notes: The key to keeping warm in changeable weather? A knitted vest. Opt for a neutral hue (think beige, sand and rust tones) to maximise the versatility of this core item, which can be layered over shirting and T-shirts or worn alone on sunnier days.
Shop the Look:
6. Tailored Trousers
Style Notes: Tailored trousers in a neutral shade elevate just about anything. Cardigan tucked in? Très Parisienne. Plain white tee? So relaxed. Complete the look with loafers or trainers, depending on where you're headed.
Shop the Look:
The Frankie Shop's trousers come influencer-approved.
7. Cross-Body Bag
Style Notes: The past several decades have solidified the cross-body bag as a must-have. Practical and polished, this it-accessory is perfect for everyday use.
Shop the Look:
8. Loafers
Style Notes: Loafers are being walked all over the streets of London right now. But they're not just a trend piece—invest in the right pair and you'll be reaching for them day in, day out.
Shop the Look:
I've bought several pairs of Zara loafers over the years and have never been disappointed.
9. Basic Tank Top
Style Notes: Wear it under a shirt, tuck it into jeans, layer it under a jumper... the styling potential of the humble tank top is boundless.
Shop the Look:
10. Straight Blue Jeans
Style Notes: As much as we love a jeans trend at Who What Wear (right now, barrel-leg denim is in the spotlight), there's no matching our affinity for straight-leg jeans. Apparently, the London style-set feels the same way.
Shop the Look:
Investing in high-quality pieces is the best way to build a capsule wardrobe.
11. Trench Coat
Style Notes: A trench coat is a fail-safe outerwear option, whatever the season. Treat it as a light cover-up in the summer months, and layer it under a wool coat come winter.
Shop the Look:
Just add jeans, a tee and some loafers.
12. A Nice Top
Style Notes: We've all heard the phrase “jeans and a nice top” which communicates Brits' uncomplicated approach to dressing up. All you need is one slightly smarter top to elevate your jeans, trousers and satin slip skirt.
Shop the Look:
13. White Cotton Shirt
Style Notes: Whether you're dressing in the depths of December or during a heatwave, a white cotton shirt is about as wearable as it gets. Tuck into trousers, layer over a tank or tie a knot and turn it into a crop top.
Shop the Look:
14. Simple Heels
Style Notes: Red shoes and printed pumps are having a moment, but plain black or nude stilettos are enduringly sophisticated. Choose a pair with a nice design detail, such as a squared-off toe or an extra strap.
Shop the Look:
I often overlook River Island shoes, but this pair caught my attention.
