4 Brands to Know in 2020, According to the Best Dressed Editor in Colombia
Don't panic, but 2020 is approximately two and a half months away. Humor me for a moment and fast-forward past Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the holiday season: What will you be wearing next year? Well, I pretty much guarantee that it will include at least one Latin American brand after you've scrolled to the end of this story. I tapped Kelly Talamas de Rilliet, former editor in chief of Vogue México y Latinoamérica, to clue us in on the best brands from the region, and you'd be wise to take some notes.
Talamas de Rilliet highlighted four brands, a mix of rising and established companies hailing from Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico. One of them is every maximalist's designer dream, while another creates intricately handcrafted bags and hats. From frilly dresses to innovative wooden accessories, these brands are masters of their craft. Scroll down to shop four names to know for 2020.
Leal Daccarett
"Though the Colombian duo has been around for a while now, I’ve been looking to them this season for my recent work trips," Talamas de Rilliet told Who What Wear. "They're skilled at creating an 'over-the-top, effortless' look, i.e., a statement top that pairs well with jeans and makes you look fabulous with minimal effort."
Sensi Studio
"I just returned from a trip to Ecuador and fell in love all over again with Sensi's work," Talamas de Rilliet said. "I had been following her for a while, but something about being in the country where her designs are created made me truly appreciate the craftsmanship behind it. She makes some of the most beautiful straw hats I've seen. Many people don't know this, but the Panama hat is originally from Ecuador—their artisans are master craftsmen of anything made with toquilla, the material used to make Panama hats."
Aurelia Mexico
"I've been wanting one of their pieces for a while. They make these beautiful wooden purses with unique leather straps that are so chic and versatile I'd find a way to match with everything or even just use to dress my coffee table."
Sandra Weil
"This Peruvian-born, Mexico City–based designer is skilled at the art of detail. I'm particularly obsessed with her tops and dresses because of their versatility. I'm currently going through a romantic, feminine phase, which might explain why I've been drawn to her last two collections."
Next, Anna Wintour says these are the eight biggest trends of 2020.
Erin got her start as a Who What Wear intern over 13 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of Associate Director of Fashion News (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
