Kate Middleton's First Day of School Outfit Is Giving '90s Julia Roberts

What comes to mind when you think of famous film costumes? For me, Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman is at the top of the list. Specifically, I'll forever associate brown-and-white polka-dot dresses with the outfit Roberts's character Vivian wore to a polo match in the classic '90s movie.

Naturally, when Kate Middleton stepped out in a sold-out Rixo dress with the very same print-and-color combo, I immediately thought of Pretty Woman. But the devil is in the details, as they say. What really sold me on the reference is the fact that the duchess paired the dress with pearl drop earrings—the same style that Roberts wore with her polka-dot number. Coincidence? Well, that's up to you to decide. Scroll down to see Prince William and Middleton's adorable first-day-of-school photos with their children, Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte.

Associate Director, Fashion News

Erin got her start as a Who What Wear intern over 13 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of Associate Director of Fashion News (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
