Jessamyn Stanley's Favorite Self-Care Ritual Is So Relatable
This is Doing Well, a series where we'll get a peek into the wellness routines of our favorite celebrities, athletes, social media personalities, entrepreneurs, and more. Think of it as a Proust Questionnaire—wellness style. Below, see what they have to say about their favorite workouts, self-care rituals, wellness goals, affirmations or mottos, and more. Maybe you'll find some inspiration for your own routine.
To say we admire Jessamyn Stanley's honest and refreshing takes on wellness would be a total understatement. We're obsessed with her, which is why we'll feature her on THE/THIRTY any chance we get. The author, advocate, entrepreneur, and yoga instructor has really changed the world of yoga for the better. As the founder of The Underbelly, a streaming wellness app with digital yoga classes, she's made the practice accessible to everyone, from experienced yogis to newbies. It's a welcoming and inclusive brand that helps everyone feel comfortable and confident in being their authentic selves.
She's also an advocate for cannabis justice and the co-founder of We Go High NC, an organization committed to increasing cannabis access in North Carolina. Its mission statement is "No one should be in jail for weed." On top of that, she hosts her own podcast, Dear Jessamyn, where she discusses relationships, sex, and lifestyle advice with her girlfriend and co-host Ashe Danger Phoenix.
And did we mention she's the author of two books? Her first book was about the power of yoga: Every Body Yoga: Let Go of Fear. Get on the Mat. Love Your Body. And her second book, Yoke: My Yoga of Self-Acceptance, was published this summer. In it, she shares essays (some autobiographical) about self-love, body positivity, race, sex and sexuality, cannabis, and more.
So you can see why we're big fans of Stanley and what she's doing for the wellness space. She recently took the time to fill out our Doing Well questionnaire, and we're so excited to share her answers with you below. Take a look at what she had to say and check out all of her ventures for more.
The first thing I do when I wake up is: Thank god that my eyes opened again.
My go-to meal before work is: Scrambled eggs over greens with bacon or a Sunrider NuPlus packet mixed with oat milk.
My favorite workout is: 15 minutes on the StairMaster, five minutes of jogging to cool down, 30 minutes on the elliptical, 30 minutes to one hour of weights, and an hour or more of yoga. I rarely have time for all that, but that's my favorite! My favorite yoga class is probably anything Kathryn Budig of Haus of Phoenix has ever taught. My favorite yoga studio was Sacred Brooklyn (RIP), and I always love happening upon a class at Y7.
Something that always puts me in a good mood: Seeing my chihuahua Baby Shark enjoy his life. Watching my cat James be regal.
My favorite feel-good Instagram accounts to follow: @colormecourtney, @iamtabithabrown, @glitterandlazers.
My must-have beauty/self-care products are: Keys Soulcare Golden Cleanser ($20), Robin's Nest Seattle body balm, Lush bath bombs.
My favorite self-care ritual is: I love taking long baths—sitting in the water until it gets cold always brings me back to neutral. I also love painting, skincare, and repotting my plants.
The one thing I do to wind down is: Turn the lights down low, burn incense or candles, and put my phone away.
My ideal chill, at-home 'fit is: Underwear and a light-texture tank, preferably from Skims.
My favorite thing about myself is: My ability to keep going when the going gets tough.
The one wellness goal I want to accomplish this year: Drink Sunrider as much as possible and drink more water!
An affirmation/motto I live by: Throw away yesterday—today is a brand-new day.
