From Skinny to Puddle: How Jennifer Lopez Styles 5 Bold Jean Trends

Jennifer Lopez has had so many statement fashion moments over the years. Remember the Versace dress, the Met Gala headpiece and, most recently, the custom Ralph Lauren wedding gown? But despite all the sparkle and glamour, it's clear that when J.Lo dresses down, she always turns to denim. In the early days of her career, she relied on daring, low-rise styles. Now in her 50s, she's branching out and perhaps revisiting some old favourites along the way.

Between baggy, pleated, skinny, and bootcut, if it's a jean style, J.Lo has probably tried it. She's never one to shy away from experimenting with different looks and knows exactly how to wear each style to maximum effect. On her honeymoon, she was spotted in an assortment of denim 'fits (along with a plethora of pretty summer dresses and on-trend shoes, of course).

Scroll down to see J.Lo's most reliable jean styles and the pieces you'll need to re-create her looks.

1. BOOTCUT

Style Notes: Bootcut jeans are a staple in J.Lo's wardrobe, so it's no surprise that she knows exactly how to wear them. With a slight flare at the ankle, they look best with ankle boots or a heel, as she perfectly demonstrates here. Keep the rest of your look simple with a crisp white shirt and polished accessories. Avoid anything too oversized on your top half to keep proportions balanced.

2. BAGGY

Style Notes: J.Lo might be a firm fan of more form-fitting styles, but this year, she's experimented with on-trend, baggier denim. I love these easy, light-wash jeans that she wore on her honeymoon. Ready for a day of exploring the city, she's kept her signature towering heels but dressed the look down with these relaxed jeans and a simple knit.

Style Notes: Here's another example of J.Lo nailing the baggy jean trend. She's paired a slogan T-shirt with a darker wash and added pops of colour. I love it!

3. SKINNIES

Style Notes: Ah, the humble skinny jean. While baggier styles reign supreme at the moment, J.Lo proves that skinnies haven't lost their allure. Paired with a black roll-neck, a sleek belt and a Birkin bag, this denim style looks so polished. Note the cool rip detailing, too.

4. PLEATED

Style Notes: J.Lo isn't afraid to try a trickier style. Here, she's opted for pleated jeans, which are so hard to get right. She's made it work with tonal accents (I'm obsessed with that coat) and a tucked-in sweater with a belt that shows off her waist. The addition of heeled boots is also essential to help add shape to an otherwise fairly relaxed outfit.

5. FLARED

Style Notes: Not to be mistaken with bootcut jeans, flares start getting wider at the knees before going all out as they hit the ankle. Nodding to the '70s, J.Lo paired these with a ruffled Dolce & Gabbana blouse and oversized sunglasses. Easy to dress up or down, this look works so well for date night or an evening out with friends.

6. PUDDLE

Style Notes: Here, J.Lo shows us how to make another tricky style work: puddle jeans (aka jeans with a hem that pools on the ground). With their extreme wide-leg and low-rise fit, they're a great choice if you're after something more relaxed. J.Lo paired hers with a simple long-sleeved T-shirt and trainers.

Poppy joined the Who What Wear UK team as managing editor in 2022. After graduating from university with a degree in English literature, she worked for a number of print and digital publications, including Women's Health, The Times, Hello! and Marie Claire. In these roles she assisted the fashion teams with print content as well as digital shopping features, shoots and celebrity news.

Prior to Who What Wear, Poppy worked at SheerLuxe as the commercial content manager. There she oversaw all paid-for site content and inclusions, managed the visual assets and briefs for branded content, and ensured all content—whether editorial or commercial—was in line with overall brand guidelines and tone. She also supported the editorial team by looking after visual merchandising on site and reviewing the brand’s daily newsletters.

As WWW UK’s managing editor, Poppy spends most of her time looking after the content calendar and all output across the brand, in addition to working with contributors, supporting with social media planning, assisting with branded content and contributing to brand strategy. Poppy prides herself on being organised, and a keen eye for detail means she oversees the production of tentpole moments such as Who What Wear’s quarterly celebrity covers, the Wedding Issue, team shoots, events, industry-facing moments, gift guides and more. In addition to this, Poppy ensures processes across the brand are efficient and effective, and is always on the lookout for ways the team can work smarter, not harder! As someone who works behind the scenes (Poppy loves a spreadsheet!), you won’t find many articles by Poppy on site, but when you do there’s no doubt they will either be focused on dresses, handbags or classic high-street buys. Or better yet, all three!

Born and raised in London, Poppy is a true city girl. When she's not thinking about clothes (or raiding her mum’s wardrobe), Poppy fills her time walking along the river with her 11-year-old labradoodle, getting stuck in a good book and enjoying as many of the city’s amazing restaurants and bars as her purse will allow! Her favourite London spots are Caravel for dinner, the Ham Yard Hotel for a fancy pre-theatre drink, Daunt Books for a new read, 26Grains for breakfast and Coal Drop's Yard for a spot of shopping.
