The Next Cheese Plant, and Other Trending Interiors Pieces for 2019

There are certain interiors trends that generate as many likes as pictures of avocado on sourdough—in 2018 our feeds were flooded with green velvet sofas from Made.com, rose-coloured linen sheets and nude illustrations on everything from prints to side plates. This year there are certain interiors pieces that are destined to be the next cheese plant and marble side table.

If you struggle to keep your family of succulents and asparagus ferns alive, then you'll be pleased to hear that the latest trending foliage doesn't require a drop of water or an in-depth survival strategy for when you are on holiday. Interiors and fashion trends are often closely aligned, and the vintage florals and tonal beige looks you'll see in every street style gallery this month, are also making a big impact in homeware departments.

Keep scrolling to see the six leading interiors trends you'll see all over your Instagram feeds in 2019.

Interiors Trend 1. Dried Flowers

Fake flowers have long had a naff reputation, however online shopping boutique Trouva says this is going to be one of the key interiors trends for 2019 with eucalyptus, lavender and thistles proving popular choices. French influencers such as Jeanne Damas often store sprawling dried bunches in straw baskets, making us think this is going to be 2019's answer to the cheese plant.

Interiors Trend 2. Investing in Sleep

Interiors trends naturally reflect wider conversations surrounding wellness and lifestyle, and sleep is something that people are looking to invest in more and more. "Rest has become our greatest luxury and in the world of sleep, business is booming," John Lewis said in its 2018 business report. "It is estimated 20,000 working days a year are lost to absenteeism caused by a lack of sleep in the UK. We've seen customers taking sleep more seriously, investing in high quality mattresses, bed frames and other accessories that improve the quality of their slumber."

Interiors Trend 3. Colourful Glassware

One thing that we are noticing on Instagram is an assortment of mismatching coloured glassware. Trouva notes in its 2019 trend report that this is part of a wider trend for retro homewares, along with quirky antiques and vintage floral that you might have found in your grandmother's house in the '70s.

Interiors Trend 4. Rattan Pieces

Sustainability is another keyword for interiors in 2019, and this is translating into an increased demand for natural materials, such as rattan. People are increasingly bringing the outside indoors, not only with a family of plants and Farrow and Ball paint that resembles a forest, but with rattan chairs and screens that look like they belong on a terrace in the Mediterranean.

Interiors Trend 5. Vintage Floral Prints

Fashion and interiors trends are often mirrored, which can be seen this year with vintage florals. There has been a return to ditsy floral prairie dresses, and many of the fashion crowd are now also covering their homes in Laura Ashley–style floral wallpapers and fabrics. Interiors Trend 6. Neutral Colours

The leading trend for S/S 19 has been beige tonal looks, and this grown-up colour palette is translating into interiors too. Trouva writes in its 2019 trend report: "With Dulux tipping spiced honey as their colour of 2019, it’s time to say goodbye grey and bonjour to beige."

Next up, see our guide to the key fashion trends for S/S 19.
