Everything India Amarteifio Wore on Her Face in That Viral TikTok Video
Meet Kymberli Williams, the beauty, brains, and talent behind clean and effortless beauty looks. The Los Angeles-based makeup artist burst onto the beauty scene with seven years of editorial and celebrity experience behind her to garner a star-studded clientele that includes Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story stars Arsema Thomas and India Amarteifio.
Last month I stumbled upon a behind-the-scenes video Williams posted to her TikTok page. It featured Amarteifio dressed to the nines for dinner with InStyle to celebrate the release of the hit Netflix series. Since going live on May 12, the video has racked up over 1.7 million views and nearly 1000 comments, most of which praise the "clean-girl" makeup look Williams created to enhance Amarteifio's natural features.
I was immediately interested in the video and saved it as a reference for future makeup looks. Luckily, my job as a beauty editor requires me to bring micro and macro industry-wide trends to the public eye, along with input from the individuals behind them. Williams' TikTok video combines two of my biggest loves in one 20-second video: period-drama love affairs and, of course, versatile makeup looks that capture the attention of beauty enthusiasts everywhere. To learn how to re-create Amarteifio's viral makeup look, I went directly to the source by contacting Williams herself.
Step 1: Skin Prep
To create a "clean-girl" makeup look, you'll want to put skin prep at the top of your to-do list. Williams began with a clean base; the Queen Charlotte actress washed her face before any products were applied. Before getting into makeup, Williams focused on brightening, moisturizing, and smoothing Amarteifio's skin to create the perfect base.
Her favorite exfoliating pads are Pacifica Beauty's Glow Baby Brightening Peel Pads, which help combat visible dry patches on the skin, deep clean, brighten, and even out the complexion. The two-sided exfoliating pads are formulated with soothing apple extract and a fast-acting multi-acid complex made from a blend of vegan lactic, glycolic, and salicylic acids.
Next, the makeup artist focused on refreshing Amarteifo's face by using Caudalie Beauty's Face Mist to prep the skin. "It smells amazing and is very refreshing and calming," says Williams. Formulated with all-natural skin-loving ingredients like grape extract, orange flower water, rosemary oil, and lemon balm essential oil, this face mist immediately tightens the pores and helps restore all skin types to a healthy and dewy state. This little beauty can also be used to set makeup.
Williams then went in with eye patches to brighten and smooth away any pesky fine lines under the eyes. Williams used these best-selling hydra-gel patches from Peter Thomas Roth. She let them sit on the skin for 10 to 15 minutes while she began Amarteifio's simple and clean eye makeup (keep scrolling to see how the makeup artist created that look). The patches use seven forms of collagen and collagen-supporting ingredients to encourage firmer and smoother skin in targeted areas. This product's steep price tag is worth the bright and youthful-looking skin it gives you.
Put your makeup brushes away! We're not done with skin prep yet. Williams next used Youth to the People's Peptides + C Energy Eye Concentrate to brighten, smooth, and de-puff Amarteifio's under-eye area. This lightweight gel is crafted from a blend of vitamin C, caffeine, and peptides and is ideal for all skin types. Williams also applied the gentle and fragrance-free product—a longtime favorite of Who What Wear beauty editors, myself includedto Amarteifio's smile lines.
Williams followed the eye cream by gently massaging Shiseido's Ultimune Power Anti-Aging Serum into Amarteifio's skin. It's a potent antioxidant face serum with a lightweight formula that uses reishi mushroom, fermented roselle extract, and heartleaf extract to boost hydration and radiance while reducing signs of aging. This is a must-have for anyone battling a broken skin barrier or who needs extra hydration under their everyday makeup. It's a holy-grail product for all skincare routines.
The last skincare product Williams used to prep Amarteifio's skin was a cream-based moisturizer from Futurewise that promotes barrier repair through slugging. It can be used daily to strengthen the skin barrier, preserve the skin's moisture levels, and protect it from external stressors. A new addition to the makeup artist's routine, Williams massaged the replenishing moisturizer in the actress' face and neck until it was soaked into the skin.
Step 2: The Makeup
Williams used the Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick from Hourglass around the perimeter of Amarteifio's face before blending it out. "After all this skin prep, her skin was now ready for foundation, concealer, and powders," Williams explains. "India wanted a fresh face. I love to under-paint for looks like this. It creates a softer look. Underpainting is a technique that's been around for years that Kevyn Aucoin and drag makeup artists have been using. It's placing the contour bronzer and blush under the foundation and blending them into one." Remember, placement is key.
This wouldn't be a Who What Wear makeup story without at least one mention of Rare Beauty's Soft Pinch Liquid Blush. After blending out Amarteifio's foundation, Williams applied the liquid blush in the shade Joy for a flawless and glowy finish. I love this shade because it's a versatile muted peach color with a radiant finish that adds a natural flush of color to all skin tones and textures.
For the base, Williams used this lightweight, buildable foundation by Face Atelier, followed by a bronzer to add warmth and concealer to brighten the under-eye area. The foundation provides full to medium coverage with a dewy, natural-looking finish that won't oxidize or shift. "I applied a thin layer on her skin, blending it into the center of the face and slowly working my way on top of the bronzer and blush," says the makeup artist. "After it's all blended, you may add more bronzer and blush if you want it a touch brighter."
Next, Williams set the actress' base with a powder. "I wanted to keep the majority of the skin dewy, so I used a powder puff with RCMA No-Color Powder only in the center of her face where she would get oily, and the camera would flash onto her," she explains. A quick scroll through Williams and Amarteifio's Instagram pages reveals this strategy worked. The makeup remained flawless and flash-free through the evening. Looks like it's time to add this secret weapon to my makeup routine.
Do you love the warm eyeshadow look on Amarteifio as much as I do? It's much easier to create than you may think—and there's a good chance you already have the products behind it in your makeup bag. On the eyes, Williams mixed Danessa Myricks Beauty's Colorfix Eye Cheek & Lip Pigment in the shades Lift and Nude 8 to create a soft brown base that offers a fresh Black girl-friendly take on the simple "clean-girl" eye makeup trend that has dominated TikTok recently.
Williams finished the eye look by adding a hint of bronze shine from one of Pat McGrath Labs' gorgeous eye shadow palettes. The palette offers a quartet of universally flattering eye shadow shades for an effortless, sun-kissed look. Formulated to stay last all day with no fallout, it's a neutral glam palette that adds the perfect amount of warmth to any "clean-girl" eye makeup, along with plenty of shimmer and shine.
To create Amarteifio's flirty lashes, Williams mixed false lashes with the actress' natural ones. "I also cut a pair of Ardell Beauty 424 Lashes in half and used the inner corner of that lash on her outer corner to lift the eye," the makeup artist says. The lashes were blended with another must-have Rare Beauty product: the Perfect Strokes Universal Volumizing Mascara. It adds length, volume, and an altogether natural-looking finish.
While I initially set out to highlight the skincare and makeup products used on Amarteifio's face, I couldn't help but notice how glowy the rest of the actress' body looked once the camera panned out to show the complete outfit. Williams was kind enough to share the secret behind the full-body glow with me. "If the face is glowy, so is the body," Williams tells me. "My favorite combination for the body to look glowy has been Chanel Beauty Coco Mademoiselle L'Huille Corps mixed with Pacifica Beauty Vegan Collagen Hydrating Body Milk Spray. I put this on India's décolletage, arms, and legs." Please excuse me while I add these products to my cart to complete my "clean girl" transformation!
