This Trending Skirt Has Helped Me Unlock So Many Great Spring Outfits

Over the years, I've come to realise that making sound fashion investments is the way forward—in other words, seeking out "classic" pieces you'll come back to again and again. And I think the long black skirt is one such item. Miu Miu recently showcased one with pleats on the runway, while The Frankie Shop and other brands have focused efforts on sleek, tailored styles. Either way, make no mistake: A black skirt is for life.

That's why, when I spotted this vintage skirt, I knew I had to have it. I source vintage, so I know a good second-hand spot when I see it. This skirt had the pleats I loved from Miu Miu but the streamlined silhouette that feels so trendy today, meaning it made sense to snap it up. My love for this piece is unconditional.

I was excited at the challenge of creating five looks with this skirt, as I knew it would be interesting to see just how different I could make each of the outfits. Skirts are handy to have in your wardrobe because they're versatile, and I'm going to show you just how much they are.

Using both new and vintage pieces, I've assembled a handful of looks that I know will carry me through spring. A few years ago, a skirt like this might have been considered old fashioned, but now, it's the epitome of chic. That's why a classic investment will always win in my eyes.

Style Notes: What I love most about a black skirt is just how versatile it is. It works so well with this blazer from Anine Bing! I like to think of this look as being very polished; something I could wear to fancy events or work dinners.

Style Notes: Here, I've paired the skirt with a knitted sweatshirt and a lacy shirt underneath, which gives it more relaxed look. I love to play with materials, and the combination here ticks off the transparent trend without revealing too much and stops the overall layering from becoming heavy-looking.

Style Notes: What I enjoy about this look is just how many events it can be styled for. This is the sort of outfit I'd rely on for work and can be easily transitioned into the evening for drinks. Worn with leather pieces like with this oversize blazer and some high-heel boots, it's both edgy and elevated.

Style Notes: For day-to-day wear, I love styling this skirt with a turtleneck sweater and my chunkiest sneakers. Throw a tailored coat (such as this one from Arket) overtop, and you've got an outfit that will keep you cosy as you hit the cobblestones.
