I'm a NY Stylist, and This Is How to Make Basic Items Look Fresh for Summer 2021

Now that summer is (just about) here, there’s no doubt we’ll be turning to our trusty basics when it comes to pulling together an easy warm-weather outfit. From tank tops to denim shorts and minimalist sandals, our summer staples serve as the backbone of our wardrobes—easy to pair with statement accessories and jewelry. But how do we keep our basics looking fresh, modern, and on-trend this summer (aka not make them feel boring after wearing them a million times)? To get inspired, I tapped into New York–based fashion stylist and all-around cool girl Ryan Gale and asked her to show us some fun and fresh ways to style the summer basics in our closet. Ryan has a knack for creatively putting together Insta-worthy outfits, so keep scrolling for her fun summer looks and shop more of our favorite summer staples should you need to give your basics an upgrade this season.

Basic: Tank Top

"A simple summer tank will go a very long way. This basic tank top was the ultimate pairing to my statement plaid William Okpo oversize pants. This outfit is super cute for a day in the park or attending a backyard barbecue. I kept my accessories simple because the pants are just enough. Simple summer tank tops are definitely a must for summer and can be paired with practically any pants, skirts, or shorts." — Gale

"I traded in my short shorts for a more classic and chic look this summer. Knee-length shorts are definitely a summer staple. I decided to go for a trendier look here with my pastel top and baby-pink sandals. I love adding color to denim during warm-weather days. It adds personality to the look and helps show off my summer tan!"

Basic: White Shirt

"There's nothing like keeping it cool in a classic white shirt. This sleeveless white button-down is super simple and a summer staple. I decided to pair this shirt with something soft and comfortable as my cotton bike shorts from By Colby. My mini pink crossbody bag and red flip-flops add a pop of color to the neutral tones of the look. I love the mixing of pink and red here. It elevated this basic look into something more modern and chic."

"If you don't own a white dress for the summer, it is a must that you purchase one now. This feather slip dress is basic but lots of fun. I decided to keep it simple with this vintage number and threw on my comfy platform sandals. You’ll be sure to stand out in a white dress during the summer."
