French Girls and A-Listers Are Already Wearing This Throwback Summer Trend
There's nothing that says "sitting by the sea with a piña colada" quite like the halterneck top. With its dramatic back-bearing silhouette and distinct noughties vibe, the trend's return has us recalling all the questionable outfits from family holidays past, which invariably included handkerchief tops, low-slung jeans, chokers and sunburnt shoulders. It's all a bit "school disco circa 1995," but apparently fashion girls are all over the school-disco style this season. Just look at this season's roll call of throwback trends: chain belts, cowl-neck dresses and tiny hair tendrils.
It might still be February, but French girls and A-listers alike are embracing this noughties detail, whether it's for a winter sun break or glitzy cocktail party. Just look at trend-setting royal Meghan Markle, who stepped out in a floor-grazing Stella McCartney halterneck gown for her after-party bridal look. We've also fallen for up-and-coming brand Harmur, which has dedicated its entire line to halterneck tops and dresses (surely a sign of things to come).
The only downside to this trend is that it can be a tricky one for large busts; however, we've come across a few halterneck tops that feature long sleeves, meaning you can wear them with a bra (hooray!). Personally, I love the idea of wearing a silken halterneck top as part of a "nice top and jeans" outfit this summer. I'll take my cues from Anne-Laure Mais, who styles a necktie top with high-waisted jeans and a half-up hairdo. Or if it's a formal look you're after, check out Alexa Chung's red midi dress look. Simply style with low-denier tights and tousled locks for a cool-girl finish.
Style Notes: A taupe-coloured halterneck top paired with black trousers and gold jewellery is the ultimate way to make the trend feel luxe.
Style Notes: This trouser-and-top pairing feels sufficiently summery thanks to the vibrant colours and cotton fabrics. We're taking notes for our upcoming holidays.
Style Notes: A silken halterneck jumpsuit is a more interesting alternative to a party dress. Emili Sindlev gives the outfit a 2019 twist with a beaded headband.
Style Notes: Everyone's favourite Brit It girl, Alexa Chung, looks like a Hollywood starlet in her halterneck red dress. Love the addition of black tights, too.
