Take it from someone who has recovered from a bleaching job gone awry: I very intimately know the frustration of dealing with (and trying to heal) brittle, damaged hair. Although I'm sure we'd all like to think we're above feeling crappy about the condition of our hair (there are more important worries in the grand scheme of things, after all), the way our hair looks and feels can have a major impact on how we feel. A fleeting bad hair day here and there is one thing, but being self-conscious about your hair (trust me, I've been there) can feel heavy. And hey, there's no shame in that! We're only human and our hair is a huge part of our identity. So obviously, we want to feel proud of it and take care of it to the best of our ability.

I don't have to tell you that overprocessing and abusing our hair with color, chemical treatments, extension, and hot tools can do a fiery number on the integrity of our strands. And while in some cases a drastic hair measure (like a mega chop) might really turn the health of your hair around, strategic, high-quality hair products—like an über-reparative mask—can work wonders. (Especially if you're consistent—consistency is key!) Since my Who What Wear Beauty partner in crime Courtney Higgs and I have both had our fair share of triumphs and torture where our hair is concerned, we're sharing some of our favorite hair masks for damaged hair below. But we're not stopping there! I also asked two top hair experts—Redken brand ambassador Matt Rez and expert hairstylist Alessandra Saman—for a few of their top picks as well. The 14 best hair masks for damaged hair are just ahead. Keep scrolling!

Erin has been writing a mix of beauty and wellness content for Who What Wear for over four years. Prior to that, she spent two and half years writing for Byrdie. She now calls Santa Monica home but grew up in Minnetonka, Minnesota, and studied writing, rhetoric, and communication at University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. She studied abroad in Galway, Ireland, and spent a summer in L.A. interning with the Byrdie and Who What Wear family. After graduating from UW, she spent one year in San Francisco, where she worked as a writer for Pottery Barn Kids and PBteen before moving down to L.A. to begin her career as a beauty editor. She considers her day-to-day beauty aesthetic very low-maintenance and relies on staples like clear brow serum (from Kimiko!), Lawless's Lip Plumping Mask in Cherry Vanilla, and an eyelash curler. For special occasions or days when she's taking more meetings or has an event, she'll wear anything and everything from Charlotte Tilbury (the foundations are game-changing), some shimmer on her lids (Stila and Róen do it best), and a few coats of the best mascara-type product on earth, Surratt's Noir Lash Tint.
