Colorists and Editors Agree—These 14 Masks Are the Antidote to Dull, Damaged Hair
It's no secret that color can wreak havoc on your tendrils. Hair dyes typically use powerful formulas (usually a cocktail of chemicals like ammonia and peroxide) that alter not only the appearance of your hair but the overall structure of your strands and their delicate follicles. They're also notorious for their ability to zap away moisture, leaving your hair dry, brittle, and at risk of further damage. So how can someone who wants to get their hair dyed counter the lasting effects?
The answer can be found in the hallowed aisles of your favorite beauty retailer: masks designed to support the health of color-treated hair. According to colorists and fellow beauty editors who've dyed their hair, it's one of the best ways to take care of your hair between appointments. If you're in the market for a new hair mask, keep scrolling. I've rounded up the best hair masks for color-treated hair in need of a hit of moisture and repair, including pics by colorists and my fellow beauty editors.
What Are Hair Masks, and Why Should I Consider Using Them?
According to celebrity colorists Christopher Naselli and Reece Walker, hair masks are essential for boosting the health of color-treated hair since they can deliver much-needed moisture, repair damage, and extend the wear time and vibrancy of your color. When shopping for a mask to add to your haircare routine, be on the lookout for products that are formulated with ingredients like keratin, shea butter, argan oil, coconut oil, vitamin E, and macadamia oil. These superhero ingredients will help nourish, protect, repair, and lock in color.
Like all hair products on the shelf, there are also some popular ingredients that should not be lurking in the formula of a color-safe hair mask. "[Avoid] ingredients like sulfates, parabens, and sodium chloride, which can strip color and damage hair further," warns Naselli. In addition to contributing to fast-paced fading, they can also strip the strands of essentials oils.
How Should I Add a Hair Mask to My Haircare Routine?
Of all the steps experts recommend taking in your hair routine to keep your tendrils happy, hair masks are by far one of the easiest ways to boost their health. "To incorporate hair masks effectively in your routine for the best results, apply after shampooing and before you condition," Naselli says. "This will allow the mask to penetrate the hair shaft, and following with your conditioner, this will seal the cuticle." He also recommends using a deep-conditioning mask once a week for extra nourishment (especially if you have dry or damaged hair).
Like Naselli, Walker encourages using your hair mask following shampoo and before your conditioner to help lock in moisture and nourishment. He also tells us using a color-safe hair mask is simpler than you think. "Just apply the mask, leave it on for about 10 to 20 minutes, and then rinse it out for the best results," explains Walker. Remember: Consistency is key! Don't skip out on treating your hair to some TLC with a hair mask if your strands are struggling.

Designed with color-treated blonde hair in mind, the mask works by strengthening the hair overnight so you can wake up with silky-smooth strands by morning.
Glowing Review: "I’m so picky with hair products, especially [now] that my hair is so damaged. So, I really needed a product to revive my dead, damaged hair. And this product is a lifesaver. It no longer feels brittle nor fried. It made my hair so soft. After bleaching it so many times, my hair needed a miracle and this product is the miracle for me."

L'Oréal Professionnel Absolut Repair Molecular Hair Mask
Beauty Director Erin Jahns touts this one as being behind her transformation from blonde to red strands. This professional hair mask by L'Oréal uses bond-building peptides to penetrate beyond the surface of the hair and target hair damage at the molecular level. Its formula also includes amino acids, which are proteins that help strengthen and nourish hair.
Glowing Review: "This is totally worth the money. It leaves my hair feeling like I just left the salon and is way less expensive than other treatments! The quality is great, leaving my hair feeling light, shiny, and soft. It smells fantastic and you only have to use a little for your whole hair (mine's about shoulder length and I use and nickel-quarter size blob)."

Kérastase Chroma Absolu Strengthening Mask
As a longtime fan of Kérastase, I had to include this classic, color-boosting mask. It prevents color fading by deeply nourishing and conditioning the hair with a helpful blend of amino, lactic, and tartaric acids to combat three levels of hair damage while recovering hair from damage caused by hair dyes. Plus, it protects the hair from color-stripping environmental stressors.
Glowing Review: "I love this mask! I definitely feel that it provides deep moisture and helps smooth and nourish my hair. I recently had my hair colored, and feel this has helped bring life and softness back to it. I highly recommend this mask. It feels like a little treat each week."

The Sachajuan mask is uniquely formulated with Ocean Silk Technology to address stressed and damaged hair while also promoting cell regeneration. With a single use, you'll notice how much more manageable and healthy-looking your hair is.
Glowing Review: "My hair is very, very long and over processed. It is prone to being dull, dry and frizzy—especially the ends. This surprisingly light feeling, silky hair mask smelled like flowers and after applying it and allowing it to sink in, I rinsed in tepid water and my damaged tresses felt much softer and easier to comb."

Christophe Robin Regenerating Mask
Christophe Robin's intensive hair mask is a must for anyone who wants to add long-lasting radiance and shine to their color-treated hair. It's formulated with rare prickly pear seed oil, plant ceramides, and inula flower extract to provide regenerative effects, revive pigment in natural and color-treated strands, and stimulate the scalp. It also combats breakage and split ends.

Glowing Review: "I loved the feel of the mask! It felt super hydrating on my hair, but not too heavy. I kept it in for about 10 minutes and washed out and continued with conditioner and my hair was noticeably softer when I got out of the shower. This is great for a fine-haired girls who need a little extra love on their ends when using heat repeatedly, etc. Would definitely recommend!"

Another one of Jahn's favorites, Sisley Paris's pre-shampoo nourishing balm helps repair dry, brittle hair using a formula enriched with botanical oils that nourish, restore, and restructure the hair fiber from top to bottom. It's also worth noting how lightweight and comfortable this product's texture feels on the strands.
Glowing Review: "My hair is not thick and full on the ends and I use a curling iron. I tried this on my hair and I knew that this is something I need to use on a regular basis. My ends were fuller, shinier and felt stronger. I wanted 'wow' results so I am happy with this hair balm."

Since adding moisture is a must for keeping the vibrancy of your color-treaded hair, it's always good to have an extremely moisturizing mask at your disposal. The Moisture & Control Deep Treatment Hair Mask should be in your product lineup for a number of reasons, but we're raising two huge ones to consider: 1) The mask was designed with curls in mind, and 2) it majorly tames frizz.
