3 Outfit Formulas French Women Always Rely On to Be Impeccably Dressed
Who wants to dress like the French? That's everyone then. Although we're adamant that part of their innate power to always look incredible is down to the items they wear, it's also down to how they wear them. Backing basics for decades—from the Breton tee and trench coat to oversized blazers—the women in France know how to put pieces together. And this, friends, is how we can learn to copy their style credentials.
There's a certain way French women always wear jeans, and lately, it seems to be with the ever-versatile shacket that's been loved for many seasons now. And when it comes to knitwear, the French girls are making a case for cardigans (and knit vests) over supersize-collar shirts. Proving that basics needn't be boring, these are the three outfit formulas French women rely on to look put-together, with minimal effort needed.
1. TRENCH COAT + STRIPED TOP
Style Notes: We're pretty sure most women own some kind of Breton striped top, T-shirt or jumper. If you don't, get one—pronto. Sara shows how, when worn with a classic trench, a stripe is the only detail you need to look on point.
Style Notes: A great trench will be a lifelong friend… if you choose the right one. Look for simplistic details when it comes to cuffs and collars, and always go for a slightly oversized fit just like Marissa.

It doesn't get more classic than a Burberry trench coat.
2. COLLARED SHIRT + KNIT
Style Notes: A seasonal highlight has to be the knit-vest-and-shirt combo. With a Parisian and Scandi feel, it's the hybrid to rely on for autumn/winter.
Style Notes: Freshen up a simple knit look with a bold collar.

3. SHACKET + JEANS
Style Notes: How chic is this ensemble? Making a case for skinnier jeans, French girls are big fans of the versatile shacket. As it's already oversized, no need to size up with this style (unless you like them super baggy).
Style Notes: Monochrome for the win. Najma sticks to basics in every element of her outfit, and it works. Yep, the checked jacket is sticking around for yet another season.
