Jennifer Lawrence and French Women Agree—This Classic and Pretty Skirt Trend Is Back
If there's one trend that’s been sneakily taking over the fashion scene lately, it's the tulle skirt. What started as a whimsical addition to runway collections, with designers like Molly Goddard leading the charge, has now infiltrated the streets and wardrobes of fashion people everywhere. From the sidewalks of New York to the boutiques of Paris and even spotted on some of Who What Wear UK's favourite stylish celebs, tulle skirts are making a statement, proving that they're no longer just reserved for ballerinas.
Last year, Jennifer Lawrence turned heads when she stepped out in a tulle skirt paired with a tailored black blazer—an edgy way to make this "feminine" piece pack a punch. And during Paris Fashion Week in February, the fashion set was spotted twirling around in tulle skirts of all lengths and colours, though black and white iterations seemed to be the favourites. Whether you're sipping champagne at a gallery opening or attending an outdoor summer soirée, a tulle skirt is the perfect choice for making a stylish entrance, and the options are endless.
There's not just tulle, but sequin, ruffles and appliqué florals alplenty. Whilst Simone Rocha, Victoria Beckham and Anthropologie's offerings feel classically "spring" with a pastel and nude palette, others are more gothic, coming in darker and even metallic tones—Noir Kei Ninomiya's take (see below) is a bold and directional option for those who aren't into "pretty".
But how to style a tulle skirt? If you're looking to dress yours up, a silk camisole and heels feel timeless and elevated (and a little Carrie Bradshaw, no?), but if you want to make this typically "girly" piece a little more rough around the edges, try it with a graphic tee and trainers. You could even sling a blazer over your shoulders to easily take the outfit from day to night.
