M&S Knows That These 5 Elegant Trends Will Define Autumn 2024
Trends can be tricky. One minute you're investing in something "must-have" and the next, it's buried at the back of your wardrobe, and even when you're immersed in the world of fashion, it can still be hard to predict which pieces will stand the test of time. Now that autumn is around the corner, we're presented with plenty of "new" twists on pieces we've probably already been wearing for years. This is the thing with trends—nothing is ever completely new, but there's always a fresh seasonal spin to make it feel relevant again. This autumn, it's all about refining the basics we love and elevating them with subtle, elegant details. From luxurious textures to effortless shapes, Marks and Spencer is leading the way with key—and most importantly, timeless—pieces you'll want to wear on repeat.
The British heritage brand has a way of creating pieces that stick around in my wardrobe long after trends have had their moment, thanks to their timeless aesthetic and high-quality craftspersonship. Think about those M&S classics like the cashmere sweaters that are still going strong and feel modern years later—that's the power of the brand's approach. This year, M&S' autumn edit is filled with elegant essentials that work perfectly within a capsule wardrobe. From buttery-soft leather separates to luxe shearling jackets, these pieces are built to last and are versatile enough for every event on my calendar.
With these key trends already making their way into my wardrobe, I'm more than excited to start layering up for autumn. I'm eyeing the deep-tan suede tote that's perfect for carrying all day, the faux-shearling aviator jacket that will elevate even the most casual looks and the brown leather trousers that will instantly update my daily uniform. These pieces aren't just for now—they're forever additions that will take me through autumn, winter and beyond.
Below, I've rounded up my top picks from M&S' autumn collection. From chic boots to timeless knitwear, these are the pieces you'll want to add to your wardrobe asap.

1. Earth-Tone Bags
There's something so effortless about this suede shoulder bag. With its minimal hardware and roomy interior, it's perfect for busy weekdays but still works with more dressed-up looks—an easy win for autumn.
The braided exterior gives this slouchy, everyday bag a bit of a twist. It's the upgrade my work bag needs.
This briefcase-style bag gives major quiet-luxury vibes. Structured but soft, it's just the right size for carrying your essentials whilst looking super put-together. Plus, burgundy is set to be the colour of the season.
2. Shearling Jackets
This aviator jacket has been on my wish list since I saw it in-store. With its shearling collar and oversized fit, it's the perfect layering piece for autumn. I'm planning to throw it over a chunky knit and leather trousers for a cool off-duty look.
Cropped and cosy, this shearling jacket is just what I need for those early autumn days. It's slightly boxy, which gives it a modern edge, and the neutral beige shade means it goes with everything in my wardrobe.
For something a bit more casual, this shearling-lined bomber jacket is ideal. It adds a layer of warmth without feeling too heavy, and the contrast of the bomber silhouette with the soft lining is a chic way to transition between seasons.
3. Fresh Footwear
Mary-Jane flats worn with socks defines autumn footwear for me. This pair ticks all the boxes: sleek, comfortable and versatile.
I can't wait to slip into these block-heel, knee-high boots. They remind me of styles I saw on the A/W 24 runways, with their suede fabric and clean lines. I'll be wearing them with a midi skirt and oversized knit.
For a more of a dressy vibe, these peep toe sandals are perfect. I can see myself reaching for these whenever I want to look put-together but still comfortable.
4. Soft Cardigans
This oversized cardigan balances luxury and ease. The relaxed fit makes it great for layering, and in two classic colourways, it's a definite win for us.
This knitted top is giving me serious Scandi vibes. It's simple yet chic, with a collar that's perfect for when the temperature drops. Pair it with wide-leg trousers for a minimalist look that feels instantly polished.
The simplest pieces are often the most versatile, and this crew-neck sweater is no exception. The lightweight knit is perfect for layering, and the gold buttons give it a little something different.
5. Leather Separates
A leather skirt is great to have in your autumn arsenal, and this A-line iteration is no exception. It's structured enough to look polished but still has plenty of movement, making it perfect for both work and weekend.
These wide-leg leather trousers are everything I didn't know I needed. They're comfortable yet make such a statement, and I can already picture wearing them with a chunky knit and ankle boots. This is another style that was all over the A/W 24 runways.
