I'm Doing No-Spend January—These 5 Winter Outfit Ideas Don't Require a CC Swipe
As the calendar turns from January to February, many people have embarked on various challenges. While some opt for the disciplined approach of dry January or the physically demanding 75 Hard, I've chosen to embrace a different kind of challenge: no-spend January. This means refraining from purchasing new clothes and accessories. Admittedly, the thought of this month filled me with a bit of dread, as I've always believed in the soothing power of retail therapy. However, I viewed this time as an opportunity to unleash my creativity by drawing inspiration from some of my favorite fashion influencers and reimagining outfits using the pieces I already have in my wardrobe.
To provide insight into my method, I'm sharing five outfits I pulled from Instagram. These ensembles range from elegant maxi-skirt combinations to casual denim outfits, ensuring something for every occasion throughout January. Many key pieces featured in these looks are likely wardrobe staples you already own, such as classic blazers, cozy wool coats, and durable ankle boots. For those who may not have these essentials on hand and are not participating in the no-spend challenge this month, I've included a selection of wardrobe must-haves that will help you dress effortlessly and stylishly. Remember: Just because we made the sensible choice not to buy clothes and accessories doesn't mean we have to spend the next month in boring outfits.
Denim Shirt + Straight-Leg Jeans + Ankle Boots
When I'm shopping my closet, my go-to outfit formula is always a Canadian tuxedo. For a pared-down take on the denim-on-denim look, take inspiration from Anouk by wearing the top half unbuttoned over a white tank top. Complete the outfit with contrasting boots and a handbag to avoid a matchy-matchy appearance.

Long Coat + Sweater + Trousers + Lug-Sole Boots
Layering high-quality wardrobe basics in various shades in the same color family can create the impression that you hired a stylist, as seen in Annabel's outfit. I admire how she chose light-wash pants and dark shades for her coat and shoes. Plus, the way she balanced her knit top and wool coat with corduroy pants to introduce more texture and make it visually interesting is something to note.
Shop the outfit:
Oversize Blazer + Maxi Skirt + Kitten Heels
Wearing a blazer as a top serves two purposes at once, and when paired with a maxi skirt, it creates a sophisticated look that conveys both style and professionalism. For footwear, black leather kitten heels complement the polished outfit perfectly. Let's not forget the last chic accessory that Sylvie has effortlessly added: leather gloves. If you don't have those, opt for a luxurious cashmere pair—they add the same warmth and hint of opulence to your outfit.
Shop the outfit:
Blazer + Button-Down Shirt + Jeans + Loafers
Freshen up a casual jeans outfit by layering a white tank top or T-shirt under a striped button-down shirt and topping the look off with your favorite blazer. Leave the top few buttons of the button-down undone to let the white tee peek through, and tuck everything into a pair of high-waisted jeans. For a polished finish, add a chunky belt and black loafers.
Shop the outfit:
Long Coat + Trousers + Ankle Boots
The easiest way to maintain a no-spend January while still looking chic is to wear a black-and-white outfit. This color combination instantly elevates any look, making it appear more expensive. While I love the aesthetic of a long white coat layered over black separates, you can style black and white any way. This color scheme is almost impossible to style incorrectly thanks to the neutral nature of the hues.
